I think Rockefeller's seat, at least as of now, is probably lost.  Are there any chances that the Democrats could gain Capito's House seat?  Who are both parties likely to recruit?

Berkley county Delegate Larry Faircloth is already in for the Rs.

Goodwin would probably be the best candidate for the Ds, IMO.

I think Goodwin is the best option to go against Capito in the Senate race, he'd at least be better than Rahall.

I do hope Goodwin runs, his tenure was far too brief last time.

Carte Goodwin's the best bet Dems would have. Him going up against Capito to get back to the Senate would be foolish.

It would be suicide for Goodwin to try against Capito. There are only two feasible scenarios that would lead Goodwin to take the plunge:

- He's holding his breath and hoping that Capito is knocked out in the primary, similar to what Donnelly did in IN. Unlike IN, though, Goodwin doesn't have the luxury of having an anointed tea party challenger waiting in the wings for Capito.

- He's trying to raise his name rec for something in the future (maybe Gov after Tomblin).

I'd be prepared to punt on this Senate seat, as well as an open SD seat, in order to shore up the handful of other red state Dems.

The latest Republican name, Alex Mooney, was the chair of the state party...in Maryland.

Ouch, carpetbagging to the extreme.

Raese's case was much worse.  He lives in Florida. Tongue

It doesn't help he was even considered too much of a douche to be chair of the Republican Party of MD by his own people.

Yeah, this race is starting off slowly. Faircloth would probably beat Mooney in a primary, though, he ran and lost statewide in 2012, and presumably he has some residual name recognition from that.

Has any former Senator ever ran for a House seat before?

Larry Pressler ran for the South Dakota At-Large House seat after losing his Senate seat to Tim Johnson, but lost the primary.

Rod Grams also lost his House bid six years after losing re-election.

Has Goodwin commented on speculation on a potential House run (I know he's denied a Senate campaign)?

He mentioned that he has small kids, so I think that would also preclude him for running from the House.

Is Rahall still seriously thinking about running?  If so, mot only would Democrats lose his House seat, but in a statewide race, he would probably run no better than even in WV-03 and not carry a single county outside of that district.

I think Nick Preservati is the Democrat's best bet for keeping this seat.

I'm curious to see what polling Tennant has seen that shows a possible path to victory in the Senate race. She should go with CD2 instead.

I wouldn't expect so many Italian names in West Virginia politics.... Preservati, Capito, Oliveiro (knocked out Mollohan), and in googling that found out Manchin is Catholic.

I suspect a lot of them come from immigrants who came over for the coal mines.

Ah, wikipedia agrees.

I remember as a kid seeing historical footage from the 1960 Dem primary and JFK's presumed problems as a Catholic in WV, so I assumed the state was more homogeneous than it is.
