Any type of situation you'd hire such a person.

Well, let's see. Neither has any money to invest, or has invested, or studied in the area, and Jeff has a bunch of credit debt. Both get subsidized by their parents. I'd probably hire both, and just listen to them opine and argue with each other for entertainment value.

Unless you have outrageous sums of money that you're trying to shield from the tax man, the financial planning industry is such a sucker's game. As I mentioned in another thread, I used to work for a financial planner at a major firm. It's more or less a sales game. She would recruit clients, and then meet with them to get all their info after they agreed to use her services. I would put the info in the computer, which would generate a prettty looking "financial plan" that was a personalized template with a bunch of common sense stuff like diversify your assets. Allocate more conservatively as you get older. Have a ton of life insurance if you have children. Make sure you take advantage of your employer's retirement system. She would meet with them again. Most people didn't understand squat, but trusted her judgement (that's why you're paying her, right), and then I would do all the paperwork to get the people their mutual funds and life insurance and so on. And, in addition to the money the clients paid, she would get a sweet kickback from the funds, many of which the company owned. Suze Orman's The Money Book will tell you just as much and would cost far, far less.

Agree with Memphis as to that kind of outfit, that hawks load mutual funds, but a fee only firm, charging by the hour, or a percentage of assets, with a passive investment strategy, that does not try to time the market beyond looking at expected returns versus risk, can be useful for many not interested in learning all this financial stuff themselves as a hobby or whatever, and so there is someone to tell them no, when they get emotional about stuff. Myself? I just dump it all into Vanguard funds (mostly index funds), and call it a day, and seldom look at anything for months on end. The more I learned, the simpler I made it all, ironically.

Also many need good tax planning advice of course, if they are not themselves infatuated with the Tax Code and Turbotax.

Yes, I would make a good financial planner. I admit it!

Heck, I even have a financial law named after me. Tongue

Facts are facts. The "law" thing is kind of a joke, but it is out there. Heck young man, by the time you hit my age, maybe you will have a law named after you. Smiley

If I had to choose, opebo.

Though I'd probably prefer to just not hire either one.

I would much prefer myself to these two guys. Teachers are notoriously poor with finances, and BushOK, well, I do not think we even need to point out his propensity to throw money away, especially other people's money.

Well, I'd rather spend money on food than on prostitutes so my choice is BushOklahoma.

Even if it's the kind of "food" BushOklahoma seems to like?

This is the only logical choice.

A compelling point. Opebo and I don't see 100% eye to eye on women (I'm no fax of anorexia), but his selections are better than the Golden Corral buffet.

No, I don't want BushOklahoma to decide for me what I should eat. If he were my financial planner his job would solely consist of planning my food expenses while giving me a free hand to buy whatever I like. Wink
