What Edwards did was worse, and will Sanford's comeback have any legs anyway?

Oh come on. They're not even close.

What Sanford did was bad.

What John Edwards did wasn't bad, it was morally bankrubt and despicable in every way imaginable.

What both of them did was bad, but Edwards had a affair with a woman while his wife had breast cancer, and he lied about it for over 2 years.  Sanford at least came out about it right away.

The main difference is that unlike Sanford, Edwards was using sympathy for his wife's cancer to advance his political career at the same time as he was siring a child with his mistress.  Also he spent campaign funds to hide the mistress and provide for her financially.

John Edwards' political career was dead even if the affair never happened.

I wonder what would have happened if Edwards had gotten the nomination in 2008 and the scandal broke out during the campaign? McCain landslide?

They both lied in public about what they did. They are both unfit. I don't have too much interest in debating who was worse, although in my opinion, Edwards was far worse, but then I have always loathed the man, and thus I admit my bias.

Given when it broke IRL, they would've probably tried to push him out of the race.

Otherwise, yeah.

Yep.

As far as I know, Sanford didn't do any thing illegal.

Simple. Sanford is a Republican, so rules don't apply to him.

Because Sanford broke it, and he bought it. He's scum for doing it, but really, it's not even close to what Edwards did.

A better question may be, if Mark Sanford, why not Anthony Weiner?

He was a frontrunner for NYC Mayor and had raised a lot of money but so far it looks like he isnt going to run, even though he is still married to the same woman and there was never evidence he had affair (unless cyber affairs count)

Also, what Scott DesJarlais did was worse than any of them, yet of course he was allowed to be re-elected. If he was a Democrat, he would have been toast even if he had a Democratic district.

First off, until he's won the runoff, I'm not about to say Sanford is headed to an actual comeback.  Secondly, I think pride has something to do with Sanford's decision to run. There's been a fair amount of snark that his ex-wife Jenny was the political brains and force in the family and that his affair was a way to get away from his domineering wife.  Should he win, he could put a lot of that snark to rest, tho he would still have to deal with snark for having had the affair in the first place. Weiner doesn't need to prove he can run a campaign on his own since he married while in office. Plus, his leaving politics may have been a condition Huma insisted on if she was going to stay as his good wife. Last but not least, Sanford is taking advantage of the fact that he had a ready source of campaign cash to use to advantage in a special election. Weiner would not be running in a special election if he ran for burgemeester.

Another question is why Spitzer isn't allowed a comeback.

Doesn't the Tea Party hate Sanford now because he's against Real ID?

His opposition to it was because of the cost to the state government for implementing the federal mandate, so that certainly wouldn't cause them to hate him. Plus, anti-illegal immigration is not a significant part of the Tea Party here as it is some places.  We haven't had as many browns show up here as in some states and where they do show up tends not to be in areas where they live so they aren't as noticeable. Last but not least, since browns usually take jobs that would stereotypically be filled by blacks if they weren't here, that's another reason we don't have tea partiers as hysterical about immigration here as in other places.

Well Sanford's scandal was in '09, give Weiner a while and he might be back.

I don't really consider this a comeback until he wins something. I mean, John Edwards could probably get some funding together and make an ad and file to run too if he wanted.

Is the typo in the title on purpose?

No. Just no.

1) what Sanford did was sh**t%y, what Edwards did was beyond that aznd cruminal to boot.

2) edwards had burned his political bridges in nc. If he hadn't run for pres in 08, he would've been in serious trouble for re-electionk

3) sanford's running in a safe r district he previously represented. If Edwards ran in a similar district (not concievable for a white southern Democrat in 95% of southern districts but theorhetically) and had sinned only as bad as Edwards he would'vedone about as well.
