Think of this, would you rather hang out with Aaron Weiss or Christopher Hitchens? (Yeah obviously we have to assume the latter is still alive.)

Right-wing atheists are the biggest assholes in the world.

This is true. They're usually white supremacists also.

Strange. In my experience they're usually Asian.

Easily Option 1.

Option 2 just sounds horrible.

In fairness, I wouldn't exactly call Hitchens representative of anything.

Are you saying that Hitchens would not be fun to hang out with? Everyone who has ever had a drink with him would disagree. Also, to call him a conservative (or even worse, claim him as a good representative of atheist conservatives)  is very misleading.

The only conservative atheist I could see myself rooming with might be Grumps.  That'd be a hoot!

I'm not atheist or a hard core conservative and I'd probably slit my wrists after 5 minutes.  K?Thx.

If one of the choices is meant to be a stalking horse for me, I'm not doing very well here. Tongue

My experience is that conservative atheists are with very little exception a) Randroids and b) male, but every other identifying characteristic is negotiable.

Nathan and I as roommates sounds like an interesting premise for an IFC sitcom or something.

"Nathan, Atomic Fetus and Savile's Paws are playing a hardcore show tonight, I'm going to smoke a bowl for Jesus and then go. You should come, I'm going to wear a t-shirt of a band from 1987 and set fire to a cop car because The Man."

"For the millionth time, no, I'm in the middle of The Pink Kabuto: Queer Samurai In 13th Century Japan. Besides, I went to Dance Witch Abortion last week like you asked and it was horrible."

"Come on bro you're a bad hipster Christian, I'm going to have to mosh for your soul in da club. Remember that Jesus was a medical marijuana practitioner. If you don't become more scene I don't know if this roommate situation is going to work out."

[Nathan ponders this]

"Yeah, you're right. Jesus did invent the gravity bong... what the hell, I'll get high with you and go to The Show At Da Club."

"Awesome bro I'll get my Ron Paul 2012 crack pipe."

[They hug, audience applaud. Fade out.]

[Fade in. BRTD and a horrified Nathan stand in a dark bar full of people who look like BRTD.]

"BRTD..."

"Isn't it awesome bro? Look at all these scene dudes."

"Is... this a gay bar?"

"WTF no bro. I have never touched another guy's dick."

"There's a flashing neon penis over the bar."

"LOL bro I have one of those in my room. Haven't you ever been to Dudefest?"

[Audience laughs, Nathan and BRTD look at the camera and both shrug, grinning. Credits.]

Conservative atheist.  Like others have said... TOTAL HOOT!   I could imagine our convos being epic.   I have enough liberal Christians in my life.  Mix it up!

One of my college roomies was in fact a conservative atheist. He wasn't at all pushy about either position, and you probably wouldn't know either one until you knew him for a while. With a caveat for a few folks who run to the opposite extreme, most people in real life are reluctant to talk about politics and religion. It doesn't make for polite conversation.

That was my thought. I don't know about other people, but I don't go around organizing debates with my roommate.

A conservative atheist would be closer to my political and religious views, so I chose the second option. But I don't think I would be hard time getting along with a Christian liberal, either.

No roommates, please, unless they're related to me, or I'm married to them.

Both are far better options then going to a Christian College in the South, and being roommates with a far right Southern Baptist. Out of these two I could easily get along well with either, assuming they aren't a total a-hole.

So, huh, when I think "liberal Christian" I picture someone like BRTD.  When I think conservative atheist, I think someone like Torie.  Obviously there are a lot of different flavors of each.  One of my sisters is a liberal Christian and though I like her, I don't think I could live with her.  I suppose it depends on how..."heavy" their opinions are.  Are they crazy liberals that are afraid of drones and GM crops or are they kind, compassionate and most importantly, understanding..ya know, like a liberal Christ would be.  Are they nutty conservative atheists that are afraid of drones and GM crops or are they of the more reasonable stripe?

All else being equal, I'll pick the atheist over the guy believing in flying spaghetti monsters.
