The 2013 Los Angeles mayoral election will be held on March 5, 2013, to elect the mayor of Los Angeles. If no candidate receives a majority of the primary votes to be elected outright, the top two finishers will advance to a runoff vote on May 21, 2013.

Incumbent mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is ineligible to run because of term limits.

Municipal elections in California are officially non-partisan.

...

Latest poll from SurveyUSA (data collected: 02/14/2013 - 02/17/2013):

26% Eric Garcetti (D)
23% Wendy Greuel (D)
14% Kevin James (R)
12% Jan Perry (D)
  6% Emanuel Pleitez
  3% Addie Miller
  2% Norton Sandler
  1% Yehuda Draiman
13% Undecided

Greuel has the best trend though:

Cell-phone and home-phone respondents included in this research: SurveyUSA interviewed 1,000 city of Los Angeles adults 02/14/13 through 02/17/13. Of the adults, 820 were registered to vote. Of the registered, 509 were determined by SurveyUSA to have already voted, or to be likely to return a ballot on or before 03/05/13, Primary Election Day. This research was conducted using blended sample, mixed mode. Respondents reachable on a home telephone (83% of likely voters) were interviewed on their home telephone in the recorded voice of a professional announcer. Respondents not reachable on a home telephone (17% of likely voters) were shown a questionnaire on their smartphone, tablet or other electronic device.

Tough choice between Garcetti and Greuel. They're both highly qualified and could be great stars in the Democratic party.

I did too, because, through google search, I learned that he is actually a Republican.

Nevertheless, still Kevin James.

I'm very much undecided still. The only candidate I've heard anything substantial about is Greuel, because she's the only one who's been hitting me with ads.

The real Kevin James is even more embarassing, best known for this infamous Hardball appearance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK0d8ENS__c

Later he appeared on The Daily Show where they mercilessly made fun of how stupid he was...to his face. Sad GOP cant come up with a better candidate.

Im voting for Garcetti

FYI to conservatives knee-jerk support of James just because he is a republican. Besides being openly stupid, he is also openly gay. Of course that doesn't matter to the rest of us but thought you might like to know.  You may want to look at the nice (married to a woman) catholic boy Emanuel Pleitez who is fiscally conservative. And even though she is a Dem, Wendy Greuel talks a lot about cutting waste and renegotiating with the unions.

In the latest SurveyUSA poll, Greuel has pulled slightly ahead:

28% Wendy Greuel (D)
26% Eric Garcetti (D)
15% Kevin James (R)
12% Jan Perry (D)
  9% Emanuel Pleitez
  1% Addie Miller
  1% Norton Sandler
  1% Yehuda Draiman
  7% Undecided

http://www.surveyusa.com/client/PollReport.aspx?g=0a320e95-47f4-4a51-a965-42ddfb5e83bf

Good trend for Greuel:

The LA Times poll finds about the same:

I voted for Garcetti

Seems almost certain there will be a Greuel/Garcetti runoff in May. Hard to say who would win that one. Anyone seen any two-way polling?

I read an article about Garcetti being a "secret Republican" because he paid to have his name on some Republican slate mailer. Cheesy

Seems like just something that was done to get as many votes as possible though. Nothing more.

I'm supporting Greuel, at least in the primary. She's a lady, and she's from my part of the city.

To those who voted today, what were the lines, if any, like?   Also, why wasn't there a high profile hispanic candidate?

I was the only person who voted when I went it in my precinct. Extrapolating from that, James probably got 100% of the vote here.

I like Garcetti, but is there any more substantive reason I should prefer Greul?

Garcetti won by 33-29 over Greuel, with 100% counted.

The Times poll was more accurate than SurveyUSA.

Pretty cool, thanks for the tip. http://graphics.latimes.com/la-mayoral-maps/#10/34.0492/-118.6008

Looks like the election was basically SFV + San Pedro (Greuel) v. Central and West LA (Garcetti) v. South Central (Perry). James had no real regional base of support except that he only did well in rich areas (of course), including the fringes of the SFV and Westchester. Even Pleitez won two precincts in El Sereno, though otherwise he seems to have done quite poorly even in heavily Hispanic areas.
