It would be pretty hard to have an invalid vote due to inactivity or posting requirements, since they practically barely exist these days.

Also, I'm not going to apologize for not following through on the more detailed counts I promised. When I saw how close the election was going to be, I didn't want to encourage strategic voting.

I will apologize for calling the second seat early. At the time, Matt had a decent lead over the third place candidate (me). However, a lot of variables changed that status and, lacking internet access, I was unable to do anything about it until after the election was over.

Phew! Thankfully there was so little of that!

Isn't SCP's vote invalid?

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=172307.msg3699123#msg3699123

He gave 4th preference to both Poriot and Mr. X

I was raging about strategic voting on both sides earlier this evening before I was forcibly told to go take a nap by another poster. You're dredging up painful memories from 7PM. Sad

Well, those who lost today can take comfort in the fact that there is a high chance of another special election quite soon. I'm pretty sure there will be at least one Senator who lacks the motivation or time to do his job or simply disappears from the forum after a couple of weeks. That's what usually happens, after all. either Kalwejt or Alfred depending on who gets the most second preferences

Actually, it goes by first preferences.

Alfred has 15 first preferences, despite what my count suggests, because of drj's write in. Kalwejt has 16 first preferences in the first count. So, they weren't tied at that stage. Poirot's voter transfers to me, while Hagrid's single-vote surplus doesn't transfer to Kalwejt or Alfred. Alfred is eliminated in the second count.

A lot obviously depends on how homely is going to deal with those ballots that contain comments such as "all these choices suck/are great" etc. He clearly stated that he would take a very liberal interpretation of the rule that one mustn't campaign in the voting booth so let's wait and see what the official result will show. If that change the results, I fully expect a lawsuit by the loser.

And that could be a good thing if it helped us clarify what "campaigning in the voting booth" really means.

I think only 20RP12 did that, and it wouldn't affect the results. His vote should count though.

He didn't break activity rules, he wasn't registered in time. You have to be registered seven days before the election in order to vote. I've introduced a constitutional amendment to eliminate that waiting period.

No votes were invalid due to activity.

As far as I see, TDAS04's vote should also be invalid. He registered for the game on April 12 but the earliest possible commencement of the election was at midnight on Thursday the 18th.

"Regular elections to the Senate shall begin between midnight Eastern Standard Time on the Thursday preceding the penultimate Friday of the month and 0001 Eastern Standard Time on the penultimate Friday itself"

Actually, McGovern's vote seems to be invalid because of too few posts.

I'm confused, I thought Matt was a lock to win?  Don't Hagrid's second preferences transfer to him or does that not matter much for some reason?

Hagrid is first person elected, but the surplus he had before has effectively been neutralized, and that's what Matts early win was based on.

I have never had the firmest understanding of how the surplus thing works (how could it be neutralized?), hence my default pessimism about my chances in any given election.  Could someone please elaborate for me?
