Congratulations to Polnut. Although I supported Maxwell, it cannot be said that Polnut doesn't deserve a seat in the Senate.

However, there are reasons for concern. If nothing dramatic happens the return to the two-party system means that future federal elections (with the exception of the regular Senate at-large elections) will be easy to predict and therefore quite boring. If you look at the last JCP vs. RPP elections before dissolution and the two most recent federal elections in 2013 I think it's fair to say that a good point of comparison may be RL presidential elections in Minnesota.
While it has lately become popular to attack the regions and call them "moribund" etc., I wouldn't be surprised if the only really close and exciting elections we will have in the future will take place on the regional level (and, as I said, every April, August and December when the general Senate at-large elections are held).

Boring elections with the usual results are absolutely no fun at all. Because the status quo seems to always to stay in tact around here

Washington is another good example - a lot of elections on the federal level will be close and entertaining, but we'll have a pretty good idea which side is going to win more often than not.

With better organization, I think the Federalists can be much more successful than the RPP was against the JCP. Matt almost won in June, and Maxwell had a pretty strong showing, all things considered. Folks like Polnut usually win in blowouts.

The Federalists should have been able to win the June election. They dropped the ball.

Don't get too discouraged about the result yet. Keep in mind Polnut is universally regarded as one of the best Atlasians and the Federalists ran a very good candidate in Maxwell and performed very well in the polling.

Unfortunately, Atlasian polling is subject to quite a lot of manipulation.

While that's true ZuWo, a lot of the Presidential polling in June was fairly accurate.

I don't think the issue is manipulation - it reflected Federalist enthusiasm

This can be true for this poll to a certain extent, but when looking at polls conducted for several elections in the immediate and more distant past I can't help but get the impression that there are people who manipulate polls either by voting in polls where they shouldn't vote or by being dishonest about their preference. I have no idea what these people's motives are but it seems to be a sad reality in this game.

I'm not sure about that. If you look at the last presidential poll, it was basically spot-on.

Zogby polls can also be accurate once in a while. Wink

Actually, I've been suspecting that there are people who manipulate polls for quite some time but these suspicions were confirmed when I started doing surveymonkey polls, which enable the person who creates a poll to look at individual responses. Indeed, in a poll I created people were asked about how they voted in past elections and there were a couple of respondents who produced too many implausible responses. For example, some of them answered that they voted for candidate X in the regional Senate election and for candidate Y in the presidential election although there was only one person who voted this way in the actual election.
Another example are job approval polls. In one instance the poll asked the respondents to state where they considered themselves on the political spectrum, and a handful of people claimed to be "conservative" but then went on to vote "disapprove" for all Federalists and "approve" for all Laborites, which seemed suspicious to me. That's why I believe that manipulating polls is more widespread than we would think.

The Atlasian Sentinel

Polnut Swears In!
By Tmthforu94

After a competitive race, former President Polnut is our new At-Large Senator.

Polls indicated a tight race, and we weren't disappointed. Though Senator Polnut's final percentage was moderately high, he held on to a narrow lead through most of the weekend, with The Sentinel only being able to project a victory for him in the final hours.

Polnut will have a task ahead of him - as President, he was a voice for compromise and moderation, seeking solutions from both sides of the aisle. Today, we are seeing an increasingly partisan environment, both on this board and over in the Senate. It is our hope that once again, Polnut will be a voice of bi-partisanship in our government, and we look forward to seeing great things come from him in the near future!

Agreed! It's no fun when I get both candidates telling me it's OK if I vote for the other guy.
