Suppose Christie, Rubio and Ryan choose not to run. The only prolific fundraisers end up being Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney, who decides "third time's the charm" after deciding Jeb Bush should not be able to run away with the nomination (Romney could highlight how George W. Bush overshadowed his run in 2012, and he is absolutely convinced that Jeb Bush cannot win the presidency, so he has reluctantly decided to run again to prevent another Republican loss).

If this happens, who would you back in the primaries?

It would depend on which Mitt shows up.

Romney without a second thought. He'd be my first choice no matter what the field was.

Democrats would absolutely love it. Just throw in some Sarah Palin too and it would be perfect!

I would vote Democrat in the GE. Both would be horrible nominees and, frankly, horrible for the country. The only Democrat I prefer over Romney or Bush is Elizabeth Warren, and even then, those two make me THINK about voting for her.

Mitt Romney would absolutely receive my unwavering support. Unfortunately, there is less than a 1% chance of him running. Sad

Romney ruined the MA GOP.  He is the worst thing that ever happened to anything ever.

Jeb is the GOP future--if you don't start putting ed reform at the center of the platform there is no conceivable winning GOP coalition I can see.

I don't see a scenario where this happens without half the party having a collective freakout and forming a third party for "real" conservatives. I can picture Erick Erickson's chubby lunchmeat head shaking and turning bright red with populist fury and indignation.

I'd go with Jeb. Romney's negatives too high. And plus, he might hire Stu Stevens again.

Jeb is not the future. He'll be a 64-year-old has-been from an unpopular political dynasty, and a wife who can't speak English well who hates the idea of him running for President.

Oh, and George W Bush already tried Education Reform (NCLB). We see how much the GOP hates that now.

Jeb Bush with a different last name would be a serious contender right now. Romney on the other hand was a problematic candidate last time around, in part from his lack of an engaging personality and in part because of the thinly-veiled opportunism behind his political views of the moment. Another makeover can only make the latter worse; another set of changes will only make him seem less real and more contrived than before.

Romney. I still like the man a lot, and even though I don't think he'd win, he'd have my support. Unless the dem nominee was Hillary. Then I'd have a serious decision to make.

Fixed.

Anyways, Romney doesn't strike me as someone who would run again.  Between the 2, I would back Jeb.

See 1964.  The moderates split and the GOP is left with an unelectable far right candidate holding all the delegates.

I knew Democrats would answer this just because you said "Republicans only".

To answer your question, I would pick Bush. After 4 more years of Obama, the Bush name will make America think of the good times.

If "the good times" you mean the Clinton years...

anyway, Jeb, if only because Mitt already had his go and lost

Clinton years, Clinton benefited from 3 things.

01. Republican congress
02. Dot.com boom
03. Adoring press
