http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenyan_general_election,_2013

The presidential race is going to be close between Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga. [the sons of the first president and the first vice president respectively.]  Latest polls have the race tied, so the prospect of a repeat of 2007 is there and all that brings.

My whole family has a particular interest in Kenya, with several having been there, plus we have a Kenyan currently staying with us. Will be watching these results closely.

Could someone (Nhoj?) please give me a hint at the differences between the parties? E.g.
- Economic ideology
- Ideas about the form of government
- Regional/ethnic cleavages

I hope that these questions don't come over as completely ignorant ;-)
Thank you!

Politics in Kenya are basically 100% ethnic alliances/politics and 0% ideological (and also 100% corrupt and nepotistic)

Uhuru Kenyatta/William Ruto are the Kikuyu/Kalenjin alliance
Raila Odinga/Kalonzo Musyoka are the Luo/Kamba alliance with Luhya support
Musalia Mudavadi is the third candidate who might or might not be a big factor, he is also a Luhya candidate

I'll have a more decent explanation when I do my blog post on this [/shameless plug]

While there's no ideological difference, I think most outsiders can get behind Odinga just because he was robbed last time.

If Kenyatta is elected, will he keep appearing at the ICC? And would the ICC's prosecutor issue an arrest and surrender order against him to avoid an al-Bashir 2.0?

That went well ...

What I meant to say was that the BBC report, I just saw, confirmed Mr Odinga was going to challenge the result. He has a week to take the challenge to the Supreme Court, which then has a couple of weeks to rule on it.
