The beginning of a new wave.....this will end well, I'm sure.

PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed a bill Friday allowing the state's school districts to arm teachers and other personnel with guns.

Supporters say the so-called sentinels could help prevent tragedies such as December's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in which 20 students and six teachers died. The law will go into effect July 1.

How long until a teacher shoots a misbehaving student?

The solution for that is simple. We need to arm the students so they can defend themselves in a situation like you describe.

Good. They can learn a great deal about what it means to live in such a free society. There are plenty of jurisdictions in the United States where this already occurs.

You know what, why don't we just plant an FBI agent as a teacher in every public school in America.

Having armed police officers stand guard at schools, is an idea I'm for, it makes any mentally disturbed person who would think about shooting kids, worry about being shot before they ever reach any of the kids. But having teachers armed, is a very bad idea. How long before some student who has been bullied, and wants to extract his revenge, steals the gun, and goes on a rampage. What a horrible idea.

Mentally disturbed people aren't exactly known for rational thinking... you know?

Yeah, but it doesn't take much rational thinking for someone to see armed police officers and know that they'll get shot up if they try anything.

Guns don't kill teachers, students do.

Armed guards or cops, sure I'm for it.......but I wouldn't trust half of the teachers I had with a squirt gun, much less a real one.

I'm shocked you would support the evil teachers' right to bear arms krazen....shouldn't we just fire them?

I think they've already learned all they need to know about a 'free society' from their abysmal pay and absurdly heavy work load.  In point of fact, a spree might be just the thing that would pop into the head of such a miserable scapegoat!  The gun will be handy.

Probably. But if we are going to pay these teachers hundreds of billions of dollars, one would think they would be trusted not to shoot the children.

Why, what did they do?

In all seriousness, though, because the rate of both school shootings and violent teacher-student attacks is close to nil (I think more have suffered from the former than the latter, but it may just be that isolated incidences of the latter go unreported), it's doubtful this'll have any effect; it's just a feel-good measure so the denizens of the South Dakota legislature can be reelected.
