What is the meaning of existentialism-as a philosophy, as a historical movement or school of thought, as a trendy label for hipsters to call themselves, as...etc....?

Would be interested in hearing the views of people here (Sorry if this question is impossibly vague Tongue )

I've always taken its core philosophy to mean having a core belief in certainty and control in life. I tend to think it plays quite well to younger people because of how honor-bound and (ridiculously at times) principled it is. After all, pragmatism only comes with age. Tongue

There is no universal or divinely-given meaning in human life--instead, we are each responsible for the creation of our own meaning.  That's the general idea of the early phases of the existentialist movement, that is.
