For those who are interested, the 2004 American Conservative Union (ACU) ratings for Congress are now on the net:

www.acuratings.com (0 being most liberal, 100 being most conservative)

One interesting stat: Zell Miller, with a 96/100 rating.

Maine:
Susan COLLINS (R): 68%
Olympia SNOWE (R): 60%

Indiana:
Richard LUGAR (R): 84

Misc.:
Elizabeth DOLE (R): 92%
Chuck HAGEL (R): 87
Byron Dorgan (D): 20%
Sam BROWNBACK (R): 96%
Jo Ann EMERSON (R-MO): 76%
Nick SMITH (R-MI): 100%
Todd PLATTS (R): 84%
F. James SENSENBRENNER (R): 92%

I'm not overly concerned with the ACU's opinion on any given member of Congress, but they are useful in flagging issues. Their efforts, along with the Cato, to call to account the GOP discretionary spending orgy under Pres. Bush was excellent work, even if I think they later had second thoughts.

Nick SMITH (R-MI): 100%

Who else had 100% ratings? Or 0% ratings?

Completely off-topic, but speaking of Sen. Miller (Ret.) - someone HAS to tell the guy who does the impression of Miller on SNL's spoof of Hardball to quit it. Don't get me wrong - it's sidesplittingly funny, but he turns an alarming shade of red, a vein starts to protrude worryingly from his forehead, and my wife and I are worried that he's going to die on television. There are some prices not worh paying for a laugh. Wink

so he's only one notch to the left of a bunch of far right wing nutcases. Wow, he sure isn't far right. I must be a moderate since I'm slightly to the right of Noam Chomsky.

My point is that people make the guy out to be the most conservative member in the Senate. That is wrong. As for him being far right in general, I still disagree. By the way, did you see the new approval ratings for PA, Smash? Finally! New numbers to argue about! Look at the PA 2006 Senate thread for more info.

These Senators scored 4 or lower, or 96 or higher, therefore meeting the arbitrary qualifications for "far leftist" or "far rightist":

(R) Jeff Sessions (AL)
(R) Jon Kyl (AZ)
(D) Barbara Boxer (CA)
(D) Dianne Feinstein (CA)
(R) Wayne Allard (CO)
(D) Chris Dodd (CT)
(D) Joe Lieberman (CT)
(D) Joe Biden (DE)
(D) Bill Nelson (FL)
(R) Saxby Chambliss (GA)
(?) Zell Miller (GA)
(R) Larry Craig (ID)
(D) Dick Durbin (IL)
(R) Chuck Grassley (IA)
(R) Sam Brownback (KS)
(R) Jim Bunning (KY)
(R) Mitch McConnell (KY)
(D) Paul Sarbanes (MD)
(D) Ted Kennedy (MA)
(D) John Kerry (MA)
(D) Carl Levin (MI)
(R) Trent Lott (MS)
(R) Kit Bond (MO)
(R) Jim Talent (MO)
(R) Conrad Burns (MT)
(R) John Sununu (NH)
(D) Jon Corzine (NJ)
(D) Frank Lautenberg (NJ)
(D) Hilary Clinton (NY)
(D) John Edwards (NC)
(R) James Inhofe (OK)
(R) Don Nickles (OK)
(D) Ron Wyden (OR)
(R) Rick Santorum (PA)
(D) Jack Reed (RI)
(R) John Cornyn (TX)
(R) Orrin Hatch (UT)
(I) James Jeffords (VT)
(D) Herb Kohl (WI)
(R) Mike Enzi (WY)
(R) Craig Thomas (WY)

That's 42 Senators: 21 Republicans, 19 Democrats, 1 Independent, and 1 Zell Miller. Somehow I doubt that over 2/5 of the Senate is full of far lefties and far righties.

Hmmm. Now by BRTD's argument, Chuck Grassley would be considered a far rightist. Would anyone agree with that? I most certainly wouldn't.

You really gotta watch out for Joe Lieberman. He got a 0 rating. He's crazier than Santorum!

He isn't the most conservative, but that doesn't mean he isn't far right wing.  Coburn, Bunning, Demint and Inhofe are further to the right but you could make a very valid argument that Santorum is the 5th most Conservative and without a doubt he is in the top 10

I don't base my decisions on what the National Journal does but they didn't include Santorum in the top 10 so to say he is "without a doubt" in the top 10 could be wrong.
