I'd heard the Governor here mention Oregon being #1 in manufacturing as a share of the state's gross product (something I found surprising) and yesterday his office posted a link to the source article of that stat which has info on all the states:

I'm surprised the manufacturing share of California's GSP isn't higher.

Why? Silicon Valley doesn't produce physical products. It just invents them.

Actually a lot of high tech work comes under manufacturing. Manufacturing of processors is an obvious one. Look at a map of manufacturing by counties, and Santa Clara is always up there.

http://www.brookings.edu/research/interactives/manufacturing-interactive

This is an interesting website. A thread was started about it a few months back but nobody really responded.

Also from that website, the average manufacturing wage in San Jose was $144,899, whereas the average wage for all jobs combined was $92,574.

Refining must count as manufacturing.

So the governor of Oregon was proclaiming that Oregon was a lot like Louisiana and Indiana?

It was a generic tweet really: https://twitter.com/GovKitz/status/312322147634782211

I remember him mentioning something about it last year too but I couldn't find a 50 state comparison map at that time (it's actually pretty easy now that I looked for a bit Tongue) so I was curious. Looking at their source data shows it's mostly computers and electronics:

I didn't think it was that high proportionally but there it is.
