I don't think it'll go to the House. Didn't Al Smith win outright with 43% of the vote?

Considering it's a tie, and even assuming a Socialist landslide in the South, I guess Eisenhower could still win a House vote with some Democratic support..
It's not a tie, Cathcon's vote is a tie breaker(he voted for Republicans presumably), so Socialists win.

So whoever he votes for loses in a tie? That doesn't make sence.

I am obligated to remove my vote from consideration in the case of a tie. It sucks, doesn't it?

And you voted for the Republican, right, so Sinclair 1952 it is!

I feel sad for Kefauver though. He deserved a better result...

Rude gloating is unappreciated in this thread, good sir.

Cathcon deserves a fair say, after all, he's the one working so hard on all of this. Though it would seem hypocritical to only change the rule now.

There's another argument in favor of giving it to Sinclair: the other candidates that received votes are clearly closer to him ideologically than to Ike. It's fair to assume that Sinclair would have won a head-to-head matchup.

While I'm sure that's true about the Hass voter, I wouldn't be too sure about the Kefauver voters picking a socialist over a moderate war hero.

I almost voted Kefauver, and only backed Sinclair because of tactical reasons and fidelity to the incumbent... so I can try to speak for them. Wink

The 1952 United States Presidential Election
1952 would boil down to the first two-way election in many years. While only eight years ago the Democrats had won their third election in a row, nominee Estes Kefauver couldn't field more than 7% of the vote. The real race was between incumbent President Upton Sinclair and Republican nominee, General Dwight D. Eisenhower. With Eisenhower's surrogates attacking the moribund economy and bringing forth claims of Communist ties within the government, it was believed the popular general would be a slam dunk. However, Sinclair, despite his age, embarked on an enthusiastic campaign and made stops in the crucial states of New York, Ohio, Illinois, and even his home state of California. He blamed the economy not on his own actions, but on the "Do-Nothing Republicans in Congress" who had attempted to stop much of his agenda and in some points had succeeded. Waging a populist campaign, he warned that with the economy in its fragile state, the nation shouldn't be so eager to dump the incumbent, even if he was the most admired man in the nation. This aggressive campaign was able to beat out the smug Republican ticket and garner an electoral vote majority.

President Upton Sinclair (Socialist-California)/Governor Daniel Hoan (Socialist-Wisconsin) 267 electoral votes, 46.6% of the popular vote
General Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican-New York)/Senator Margaret Chase Smith (Republican-Maine) 264 electoral votes, 44.8% of the popular vote
Senator Estes Kefauver (Democrat-Tennessee)/Governor Adlai E. Stevenson II (Democrat-Illinois) 0 electoral votes, 6.9% of the popular vote
Former State Attorney General Eric Hass (Socialist Labor-New York)/Congressman Arla A. Albaugh (Socialist Labor-Ohio) 0 electoral votes, 1.7% of the popular vote

To be fair, he may be a relative neophyte; I myself, for example, have only been really following this since 1840.

I was forced to hand the election to DeWitt Clinton instead of Rufus King. Awful election. I blame the other fifteen voters.

I voted Sinclair, but Kefauver would've been my second choice.
