I mean, at this point it's when, not if. Besides, most Americans support it already.

Do any of the R contenders support SSM? If not, do you think they will retcon their views and say they do when it's closer to election season?

Only Huntsman and Portman are for it, and will NEVER get the nomination because of that.

They should not support it for the primary, they should support it for the general.  It's just how things are.  That's part of the reason why the Republicans have lost all the popular votes save one (2004) since 1988.

Whatever they do, they shouldn't do that. Such an obvious and transparent flip-flop in the middle of a campaign would be disastrous. No one on either side would want to vote for them at that point.

Well, they could refuse to address the issue before nomination.

It'll be a dying issue by then. It'll be legal nationwide thanks to the Supreme Court, and the only debate will be between respecting the Supreme Court's ruling (which most of the candidates will support) and trying to pass an amendment (which only the Tea Party champions will back).

I think that they will take a state's rights stance on it by 2016, and if Rand Paul is the nominee, he will most likely take a "government out of it" stance (at least I hope).

No, and they should become more like the Prohibition party, and just be a joke party that outlived its usefullness long ago.

Well, the Republican Party eventually abandoned prohibition as an issue. Maybe the CountryClassSFs of the GOP can form the God Hates Fags Party and maybe get ballot access in Alabama, Kansas and Arkansas. (Oklahoma's insane ballot access laws make that possibility out of reach).

I'm sure Oklahoma would make an exception for this particular party...

No- because the Bible says so...I sure hope the Republican nominee follows the Good Book to the letter so we can execute women for adultery and ban castrated men from churches and chop off the hands of shoplifters!

I am a Christian man...I go to church most every Sunday- but the Republicans' claim that their politics are bound by scripture when they claim to be the party of individual decision making is one of their most hypocritical tenets, and THAT is saying something...

They should because it's the right thing to do.

But the best you're gonna get is a states right stance or maybe civil unions.

My point is that Prohibition Party still exists, but hardly anyone even knows that.

Should they? Yes.  Will they?  Probably not until the next decade.

I think it will happen, if not 2016, then 2020 at the latest.  Maybe even the 2018 mid-terms.

I'd be impressed if they merely drop the constitutional amendment from their platform.

As I discussed in the other thread, I believe the only way us Americans can preserve the sanctity of marriage is to pass a Federal Marriage Amendment. This will stop activist judges from redefining the institution for all of America

If the Republican Party goes this route, they have surrendered the culture wars

Indeed, the country can't afford for the Democrats to win every election for the next 20 years.  -- And I'm a Democrat.
