Doesn't it suck to have your candidate lose once, and not an immense amount of times?

If Ike can't win in the People's Republic of Atleftica, then I doubt any Republican can.

Seven times, actually. Birney, Birney, Bristow, Butler, Weaver, Stedman, and now Kefauver

They aren't. I'm saying that, based on what people have said, Eisenhower's winning. We'll find out at about 1:15 PM, EST.

15 minutes!

If Eisenhower loses this, Republicans may as well give up and let the uncompetitive cycles begin.

Now, see, if we had gotten all those Socialists to vote for Kefauver, we could have avoided this.

Ah, well, que sera sera. Onto 1960.

The 1956 United States Presidential Election
With the nationally admired General Eisenhower heading the Republican ticket, Republicans won their first Presidential Election in forty years. His victory would credit it with not only that, but "Ike"'s appeal to moderates and even liberals, the splitting of the left-wing vote, winning of the female vote thanks to the presence of Margaret Chase Smith on the ticket, and fear of the spread of international communism. White Southerners, dissatisfied with Kefauver, would instead turn away from the traditional three parties and vote for Unpledged electors in the states of South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. These electors would later cast their votes for Herman Talmadge.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican-New York)/Senator Margaret Chase Smith (Republican-Maine)    435 electoral votes, 47% of the popular vote
Senator Estes Kefauver (Democrat-Tennessee)/Senator Hubert H. Humphrey (Democrat-Minnesota) 57 electoral votes, 31.8% of the popular vote
Vice President Daniel Hoan (Socialist-Wisconsin)/Congressman Samuel H. Friedman (Socialist-New York)   24 electoral votes, 18.2% of the popular vote
Senator Herman Talmadge (Democrat-Georgia)/Former Congressman Thomas H. Werdel (Democrat-California) [Unpledged Electors] 15 electoral votes, 3% of the popular vote
