The year is 1956. With President Sinclair's retirement from politics, the Socialist party has been left to nominate his Vice President, Daniel Hoan, for the office of President. He is running on Sinclair's legacy, however, the party is left uninspired by his candidacy. Instead, liberal and populist Democrat Estes Kefauver is looking more attractive to a number of non-aligned leftists and more moderate Socialists. He may, as well, be the first Democrat to have a good chance at courting the African-American vote. Meanwhile, the Republicans have nominated war hero Dwight D. Eisenhower once again, and with the same running mate. Eisenhower is running mainly on foreign policy issues, including the Republican plans on stemming the tide of Soviet strength. However, he also has included support for an interstate highway system to respond to both create greater ease in transportation and serve national security interests. In the South, "Dixiecrats" are unhappy with Kefauver and some are unwilling to support Eisenhower, and thus are voting for unpledged electors.

Kefauver!  Let's finally elect a Democrat from somewhere other than New York Tongue

Or you could have a Republican from New York Wink

Though awhile back I did a scan of the master thread.  The longest gap between presidents from NY is 3, and not counting the first time, which was the first three president, 2 of those 3 presidents in the gap were inheritors, not elected.

Ah yes, Norris-Debs-Stedman. Tongue Though if we count in terms of actual years, the Clay-Webster era (sixteen years) might count for one of the largest time gaps between New York presidents.

Yo, Cath, when a VP ascends to office, do they have to select a new VP? TR, Norris, and Stedman didn't.

That invention will occur roughly around the time that it does in real life. May be after the next death, or after November 22nd, 1963.

Yes, that's why I'm enjoying this while I can. Tongue

Now I know how you guys felt during the Progressive and Socialist Eras.

Doesn't it suck to have your candidate lose once, and not an immense amount of times?

I have to leave for work soon, so I sadly won't be around to officiate the results.

The 1956 United States Presidential Election
With the nationally admired General Eisenhower heading the Republican ticket, Republicans won their first Presidential Election in forty years. His victory would credit it with not only that, but "Ike"'s appeal to moderates and even liberals, the splitting of the left-wing vote, winning of the female vote thanks to the presence of Margaret Chase Smith on the ticket, and fear of the spread of international communism. White Southerners, dissatisfied with Kefauver, would instead turn away from the traditional three parties and vote for Unpledged electors in the states of South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. These electors would later cast their votes for Herman Talmadge.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican-New York)/Senator Margaret Chase Smith (Republican-Maine)    435 electoral votes, 47% of the popular vote
Senator Estes Kefauver (Democrat-Tennessee)/Senator Hubert H. Humphrey (Democrat-Minnesota) 57 electoral votes, 31.8% of the popular vote
Vice President Daniel Hoan (Socialist-Wisconsin)/Congressman Samuel H. Friedman (Socialist-New York)   24 electoral votes, 18.2% of the popular vote
Senator Herman Talmadge (Democrat-Georgia)/Former Congressman Thomas H. Werdel (Democrat-California) [Unpledged Electors] 15 electoral votes, 3% of the popular vote
