Official Name: Status Pontificius
Common Name: Papal States or Rome
Territorial Description: Central Italy plus Malta and Elba
Capital: Rome
Government: Absolute Theocracy, but in foreign affairs a protectorate of the Holy Roman Empire of the Latin Peoples
Head of State: Pope Agnus III
Level of Freedom: Medium
Population: 12 million
Languages: Modern Latin is the sole language of government, but most people speak and write Romanesco, and non-seminary schools offer instruction in Romanesco.
Religion: Roman Catholic. Duh!
Level of Technology and Development: Medium.  High tech goods are readily available to the populace, but Religion, Education, Tourism, and Agriculture are the primary industries,
History: Essentially similar to that of OTL Papal States except it was never lost due to Italian Unification.
Interesting Fact 1: Establishing the full particulars of papal infallibility was not a feature of the Sixth Lateran Council (this world's parallel to First Vatican).
Interesting Fact 2: The College of Cardinals includes several Cardinal Abbots and Abbesses in addition to the Cardinal Bishops, Priests, and Deacons of OTL.  Of the 115 cardinal electors that elected Agnus III, 3 were women.
Military: The Marina Pontificia consists mainly of coast guard type vessels, but also twelve Apostle-class hospital ships that in peacetime provide their services in less affluent areas, but in wartime serve as hospital ships for the Imperial Navy.

(Note: I used the last PNG as the basis of this map, adding both East Africa and the Papal States)

Official Name: Confederació d'Indígenes [Confederación de Indígenas, Confederation of Natives]
Common Name: La Confederació, La Confederación, The Confederation
Territorial Description: Approximately OTL Alabama; the area between Jamestown and the Aragonese Kingdoms
Capital: Tallahata (near OTL Birmingham)
Government: Loose confederation with most governance done by the 31 tribal governments. The 53-member national assembly conducts foreign affairs and a select few domestic matters deemed of major importance (such as health care and highways). There is no official head of state other than the 31 tribal chiefs.
Level of Freedom: Freedom of speech, religion, etc. are completely respected. The nation's poverty prevents the citizens from having many opportunities to express themselves, but free speech, press, religion, etc., is completely allowed.
Population: 7,826,209. All citizens belong to one of the 31 tribes, primarily the Muscogee (31%), Haudenosaunee (23%), Tsalagi (19%), or Chahta (16%). The other 11% come from the 27 minor tribes. Ethnically, almost everyone is tri-racial, with 71% of the population is mostly Native, with 15% mostly black (descended from slaves), 3% most white, and 11% with no majority. Generally, the population identifies by their tribe and not their racial background.
Languages: Pan-Indigino, an artificial mix of the major native languages is the official language of government and schooling, and most inhabitants also speak their local tribal languages. Around 20% of the population is fluent in a non-Native language, generally English, Castilian, or Modern Latin.
Religion: Espiritas, an organized blending of polytheistic tribal faiths (56%), Catholic (21%), traditional tribal faiths (13%), other (3%), none (7%)
Level of Technology and Development: Generally low, but no worse than poorer rural areas of the OTL Deep South.
History: The area was claimed variously by Castile, England, and Aragon through the 1600s, neither country ever really settled it, mostly because of the hostile native tribes in area. By the 1770s, Jamestown, the Latin Kingdom of New Burgundy, and [the newly-independent Castilian state to the North] still hadn't formally settled the boundary in the area, and all 3 still had yet to settle how to integrate Natives into their societies. Taking care of both issues at once, the 1785 Treaty of Carlisle declared that the area between the 3 countries to be a no-man's land to be inhabited by natives only. Natives would be allowed to stay in their current location only if they adopted European culture; otherwise, they would be relocated to this new Confederation of Natives, where they could live however they wanted. While Jamestown's deportations were generally humane, New Burgundy's deportations were characterized by mass misery and cruelty.
Originally, the nation was governed by a Council of Overseers, with 9 White members from the nearby states and 2 representatives each from the major Native tribes: Muscogee [Creek], Tsalagi [Cherokee], and Chahta [Choctaw]. Other smaller Native tribes who immigrated or were deported here had no say in the government. In the first century, the Confederation was generally just used as a pawn in the bordering nations' political games: for example, slavery was legal in [Castilian nation] and New Burgundy, but not Jamestown, but rather than accepting escaped slaves itself, Jamestown strong-armed the Chahta into accepting them. By the time the New Burgundy finally abolished slavery in the 1870s, the black population of the Confederation was nearly 30%, although that has since blended down.
Unable to justify why they were running another country, Jamestown and [Castilian nation] withdrew from the Council of Overseers in 1899, allowing the Council to vote out the Latin members and reorganize into a National Assembly where all tribes were represented. Shortly after, the Haudenosaunee [Iroquois] Tribe made a stunning announcement in 1901: they would be leaving New Caledonian reservations and emigrating to the Confederation en masse. The Haudenosaunee were tired of being second class citizens and saw a chance to be the upper class in a country who would want them. They brought a higher standard of living, industrial know-how, education, and general wealth into the nation, which the other tribes appreciated. By 1931, the Confederation was as developed as the more rural parts of New Burgundy.
The Confederation spent the 20th century with an isolationist foreign policy, except for close relations with Jamestown and [Castilian state], who are both embarrassed by their past treatment of the Natives. Relations with New Burgundy and the Aragonese Crown in general are cool, but have improved since Ferdinand VII came to the throne.
Interesting Fact Immigration is generally not allowed, unless one marries a member of a tribe, or (occasionally) if a tribe decides to make an exception for a needed skill. The Confederation was the first nation to recognize homosexual marriages, doing so nationwide in 1961, and in some tribes as early as the late 1940s.

Official Name:  The Magellanic Kingdom of Tierra del Fuego and Valdivia
Common Names:   Magellanic Kingdom, Tierra del Fuego, Valdivia
Territorial Description:   The island of Tierra del Fuego in southern Patagonia, extending north to the Chiloe Archipelago on the Pacific coast, plus the Argentine province of Santa Cruz.
Capital:   Punta Arenas
Government:   Insular constitutional monarchy with a hereditary line of succession to a figurehead throne. Divided into 6 provinces which each elect a delegation of 10 members to the unicameral Magellanic Assembly. The provinces are adjusted to have approximately equal population after every 5-year census. It has a functioning multi-party system with 3 parties usually vying for a plurality nationally. The party with the largest number of seats (usually in coalition with smaller parties) designates a Premier, who is almost always the most senior member of that party. The Premier is a powerful leader who is de jure head of government but also de facto head of state with many executive powers granted him or her by the monarch.
Level of Freedom:   Moderately high. The Kingdom is fairly isolated from other states, so the government has a reasonable level of control over the national media, but the level of propaganda is low. Citizens enjoy a high level of personal freedom and democratic principles are well ingrained in society.
Population: 4 million
Languages:   Modern Latin (85% first language, 99% total), Mapudungun (15%, a few elders monolingual), Yaghan (very few native speakers and declining; mostly ceremonial). The dialect of Latin is very divergent from that of the Iberian peninsula, and referred to as Magellic. Latin and Mapudungun co-official, recognized by law and citizens may choose to have any legal or other documents printed in either language.
Religion:   53% Christian (almost all Roman Catholic), 40% non-practicing or irreligious, 7% other.
Level of Technology and Development:   Average. Fairly large gap between urban development and rural areas (mostly populated by Amerindians and farmers of mixed ancestry), but in the last century road networks have improved dramatically. There has long been a regular ferry service between the main island of Tierra del Fuego and the mainland, which in the last half-century has seen major upgrades to both its ferries and terminals. Much travel in the southern islands region is conducted by boat, while the mainland has a (somewhat dated) rail transport system in addition to its roads. 21st centurie technologies such as the internet and cell phones have started spreading through the populace, originating in Punta Arenas and has yet to spread to the further reaches of the country. There is an abundance of fresh drinking water. The economy is dependent on trade (mostly through the port of Punta Arenas), agriculture and some light industry.
History:    Francisco Magellan embarked on his voyage of circumnavigation in 1519, funded by the Crown of Aragon. However, upon reaching the (to be named) Strait of Magellan, the crew of his 5 ships were devastated by scurvy and all manner of other ails and were forced to anchor in Tierra del Fuego and relied for a year on help from stunned but curious natives. The crew, mostly of Iberian origin, befriended the natives and a settlement was founded at what is now Punta Arenas. The following year, a revitalized crew returned to Europe with proposals for a new colony. The Crown prepared and funded a colonization expedition, and nearly went off without a hitch. But Castile learned of the voyage and conspired to stop them, sending a fleet of ships to pursue, but they turned back after being defeated in a short skirmish. This caused friction for the next century and a half, boiling over in the Magello-Castilian War in 16__-__. With the backing from most of Europe the Aragonese prevailed, after which the colony declared itself an independent kingdom. Its independence was recognized by the Holy Roman Empire of the Latin Peoples in 1699 and remained an absolute monarchy until republican reforms in 1887. The Magellanic Kingdom has not been involved in any major conflict since then.
Interesting Fact:   In the absence of a major power to construct the Panama Canal, the seaport at Punta Arenas sees large shipping volume and remains an important stop for shipping and travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

I like your country a lot, but Portugal did not exist after 1450 according to one of the earlier histories.  Can you edit your history to be consistent with the rest of the world? Since Castile's history mentioned its colonies going independent later, perhaps it would have been Aragon (the Holy Roman Empire of the Latin Kingdoms) who founded the colony?

Ah yes I didn't factor that in. Aragon will work, I'll edit it to that history.

Just to be clear, I left the issue of when and if Aragonese colonies went independent vague on purpose. (Indeed, I left whether there were any that went independent vague.)

Official Name: United Kingdom of France and England
Common Name: France-England
Territorial Description: England less Wales and Cornwall, Northern France less Brittany, Belgium, Germany west of the Rhine, Trinidad (known as Isle de Kaira in this timeline)
Capital: Rouen
Government: Constitutional Monarchy
Head of State: King Henri XIV
Level of Freedom: High
Population: 88 Million, French 55%, English 30%, Deutsch 10%, Other 5%
Languages: French and English (Both are closer to each other than in OTL.)
Religion: Catholic 51%, other Christian 42%, other 7% (based on the registered profession of the subjects, tho many are in fact secular)
Level of Technology and Development: High
History: The two kingdoms were held in a personal union following the conclusion of the Eighty Years War, but were only legally united into one realm after the Parlement of London granted the colony of Jamestown its independence despite the preferences of the king and the various French parlements.  Hence King James III and his successor King Arthur II made forging their realms into a single unitary state a priority.  Save for Trinidad, the various overseas colonies have been lost due to war or independence movements.
Interesting Fact: London and Antwerp are the primary economic centres of the country, the capital of Rouen is the third largest city, while Paris is now a small university city with a population of only 106,320 as of the last census.

Offical Name: The Most Serene Republic of St. Mark
Common Name: St. Mark, San Marco
Territorial Description: OTL Barbados
Capital: The island is governed as if it is one city
Government: The government is run by a board of directors and a doge, elected by the citizens every 5 years. Generally, the government is hands-off, generally passing laws that will make the island appeal to tourists.
Level of Freedom: Very high. As long as you aren't hurting others against their will, pretty much anything goes, although the sex industry is confined to certain districts.
Population: St. Mark fewer than 10,000 citizens, but there will be 200,000 or more people on the island at any given time.
Languages: Venetian is the official language of government, but dozens of languages can be heard by a tourist on a single trip. It is the world's playground.
Religion: Generally, the island is not associated with religion, but there are churches, mosques, temples, etc., on the island for the religious-minded tourists
Level of Technology and Development: Very high. The entire island is urban, and the latest, coolest technological developments always find their way there.
History: St. Mark was the Republic of Venice's only colonial possession in the New World, a sugar island that made rich Venetian families even richer. St. Mark abolished slavery in 1795, but conditions were still unequal, and most islanders lived in poverty.
Venice quickly surrendered in PE2 in the 1880s in order to avoid destruction and mass death, and part of the terms was giving up possession of the island. St. Mark was an unimportant poor country until 1949, when rich Venetian businessman Umberto Grimani had his fantastical vision of an island paradise completely devoted to gambling and entertainment. He and his associates bought up all of the land on the entire island, sometimes bribing local officials into forcing unwilling locals to sell, and laid out a planned city with casinos, red light districts, concert halls, stadiums, and and fabulous beaches and resorts.
Known as "Sin Island" until the 1970s, when Board of Directors realized it needed to clean up its act to appeal to more people. Today, if you're rich, you can find anything you want on St. Mark, from strip clubs and prostitutes to wholesome, family-oriented fun, from exclusive concerts and cultural shows to the latest new gadgets invented. The resorts are some of the finest in the world, and it's almost how farcical how posh some of them are. You haven't really made it in the world until you buy a condo on St. Mark, although citizenship is only by birth, and consists of descendants of the people who built the paradise in the 1950s.
Interesting Fact: Sport tourism is very popular in St. Mark. Professional, amateur, and international teams from virtually every sport hold games there to get sports fan tourists to come and spend money. St. Mark's football and other national teams are horrible, but the island has hosted a disproportionate amount of tournaments and championships just because other team's fans love travelling there to watch their team and have other fun.

Official Name: Republic of Australia
Common Name: Australia
Territorial Description: Confusingly, this world's Australia corresponds to our New Zealand, plus most of the Ross Dependency
Capital: Henriville (OTL Wellington)
Government: Republic
Level of Freedom: High
Population: 6 million people, 36 million sheep
Languages: French 80%, English 40%, Maori 10%
Religion: Church of Australia 60%, Roman Catholic 20%, Other Christian 10%, Other 10%
Level of Technology and Development: Moderate
History: Colonized by France and England beginning in the 18th century following the loss of Jamestown.  Many of the settlers of the northern island (New England) were French Reformationists and thus the colonial administration chose to give them government backing. The southern island (New France) was largely colonized by English Catholic sheep-farmers.  19th century corruption in the royal court and the distance from the United Kingdom led to a desire for an independent republic which was established with assistance from Aragon during PE2.
Interesting Fact: Disparaging terms for Australians include "sheeple" and "shıtizens", as a reference to the sheep farming industry.

Official Name(s)Sad Republic of Choka
Commonly known as: Choka
Territorial description: OTL Sakhalin
Government: Republic
Capital: Khoe
Population: 316 029
Religions: 55% Roman Catholic, 25% Eastern Orthodox, 15% native religions, 5% other
Languages: Lithuanian (official) 95%, French (official) 85%, English (official) 45%, Ainu 15%, Nivkh 15%, Ul'ta 5%
Ethnic groups: 46% European (Lithuanian/French/English), 32% native (Ainu/Nivkh/Ul'ta), 22% mixed
Level of Tech and Development: Moderately high
Level of Freedom: High.
History: The nomadic peoples of Choka Island had been tributaries to mainland powers more or less continuously until 1722, when the Lithuanian Empire established a trading post at the village of Khoe. Over the next few years, Lithuania would expand its influence, razing the Hokkaidan colony of Ootomari in 1727. A unified Principality of Choka was soon established as part of Lithuania.
During the collapse of the Lithuanian Empire in the 1820s, France-England, using questionable tactics, installed one of King Charles III's nephews as Prince of Choka. They maintained (very loose) control until 1904, when it was decided that stifling the various independence movements was not worth it anymore.
Oil was discovered in the new Republic of Choka four years later, and remains by far its primary industry.

Official Name:  The United Celtic Republics
Common Name:  The Celtic Union or "C.U."
Territorial Description:  Ireland, Wales and Cornwall
Government:   Confederal presidential republic, all three Celtic nations are governed by separate Celtic parliaments who elect a national president with very limited constitutional powers.  However, beginning in the 1970s the president has become to play a more important role in Celtic government and, some have argued, usurped the role of the Celtic parliaments at times.
Capital:   No national capital; Dublin, Cardiff, and Truro are the capitals of the independent Celtic republics.  For all intensive purposes, however, Dublin is the social, political, and economic center of the Celtic Union.  The national president maintains a private residence.
Population: 10 million
Religions:   Roman Catholic (35%), Neo-Pagan (28%), Protestant (13%),  Other (2%), Irreligious (22%)
Languages:  No official language, the three Celtic languages (Irish Gaelic, Cymraeg, and Cornish) have supreme status in their respective realms.  The use of the French or English languages in public has been outlawed, by decree of the national president with the consent of all three Celtic parliaments, since 1924.  Today, less than 30 percent of the population maintains basic fluency in English or French.
Level of Tech and Development:  Traditionally one of the most backward regions of Western Europe, economic reforms coupled with an increase in multinational trade propelled the Celtic Union to "firt world" status during the 1970s.  Today, the country is only marginally behind the rest of Western Europe in terms of technological development.
Level of Freedom:  Moderately high.  Civil liberties and individual rights are protected, but in many ways racism towards French-English people and customs is still institutionalized.
History:   All three of these Celtic republics existed under French-English control until 1922.  Following the Second Pan-European War (1880s), cries for the creation of a independent Celtic state became louder as ethno-nationalistic thought swept through most of Europe.  The dawn of the 20th century in France-England saw increased tensions between the Celts and their mainly Germanic rulers.  In 1918, following a terrorist attack on London by a Celtic nationalist group, French-English troops placed the Celtic regions under martial law.  This placed new strains on the relationship between Scotland (who had traditionally been the strongest international supporter of the Celts) and France-England.  Following a series of diplomatic missteps between Scotland and France-England, tensions erupted in the Pan-Celtic War (1920-1922) in which the Celtic republics declared their independence and joined the ranks of Scottish troops to fight the French-English.  Early in the war, France-England used its superior navy to blockade Scottish and Celtic ports.  The magnitude of the war deepened when French-English seamen commandeered a New Caledonian merchantship bound for Brittany and detained the crew in England on suspicion of supplying munitions to the Celts.  In response, New Caledonia joined the Pan-Celtic Alliance and, after the New Caldonian navy was able to command control of the North Atlantic, France-England surrendered.  Sovereignty for the Celtic republics was negotiated, and these republics agreed to unite under a confederal government for their protection.  France-England's lost of the Celtic republics in the 1920s ultimately would set the stage for the Third Pan-European War's eruption only a decade later.  The war also served to secure the undisputed position of New Caledonia as a world power.  The Celtic Union remained neutral in the Third Pan-European War, and has maintained this isolationist foreign policy well into the 21st Century.  Former  president Aidan O'Keefe was chiefly responsible for the Celtic Union's intensive modernization efforts of the 1970s and 1980s, and he is considered a transformational (yet still controversial) figure among Celtic historians.  Today, the Celtic Union is an increasingly urban, connected society struggling to stay in touch with its ethnic roots.  This struggle is best represented by neo-nationalist groups who, since the late 1990s, have engaged in power struggles with the political “establishment” of the Celtic Union that favors further modernization and integration.
Interesting Fact:  The Celtic Union is the only nation of  Europe that does not have any sovereign debt, this is mainly due to the C.U.’s almost non-existent military, privately run health care system, and high import tariffs.

Official Name:  The Caucasian Federation
Common Name:  Caucasia, The C.F.
Territorial Description:  The Caucasus Mountains; OTL Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Caucasian Russia
Government:   Federal republic comprising 10 semi-autonomous states drawn along entho-linguistic lines. Each state has its own government with separate executive, legislative and judicial branches; the national federal government (with equivalent structure) has ultimate authority over all states. A President is elected by FPP every 3 years with unlimited re-election. There is a bicameral legislature – the upper Senate and the lower Assembly. Elections occur simultaneously every 3 years, always the year before a president is elected.
Capital:   Rustavi, in the state of Sakartvelo (OTL Georgia)
Population: 20 million
Religions:   No state religion. Armenian Orthodoxy 47%, Zoroastrianism 30%, Islam 20%, other 3%. Religious tolerance is very high.
Languages:  Diverse range of languages. The most commonly spoken are: Kartuli (Georgian) 31%, Azeri 25%, Hayeren (Armenian) 19%, all others 25%. All languages with over 2000 speakers have official status nationally (though states may give smaller regional languages higher status), but Kartuli, Azeri and Hayeren are used as lingua franca depending on the region.
Level of Tech and Development:  Medium. Relative isolation from western powers has meant modern technologies have yet to become widespread. Most innovations that have spread have come from the Persian Empire, but are mostly limited to the few larger cities.
Level of Freedom:  High, but somewhat unbalanced. Officially, all states are equal under law, but in practice, the more populous states often achieve higher representation in the federal government. However there is little abuse of power and the media are generally free and open.
History:   For centuries the Caucasus region was inhabited by a diverse range of ethnic and linguistic groups, mostly living in traditional agricultural, nomadic or settled communities. Occasionally two or more groups would come into conflict over territory, resources or the politics of marriage, but feuds were not long-lasting and the region has been largely peaceful. It is believed that long ago several different religions were practiced, but Zoroastrianism was the first to unite large swathes of people under one belief system. Beginning in ____ Christianity arrived (though mostly confined to the Armenians), and by ____ Islam had conquered much of the less populated northern region, pushing back Zoroastrianism to the southeast. Religious tensions increased through the 19th century, and nearly led to what could have been a lengthy and destructive war. However, in 1923, Khvtiso Lazarashvili, a Kartuli speaker and Zoroastrian from Rustavi, crusaded in the name of peace and religious tolerance. He was successful, and in 1931, upon the federation of the states, he was elected the first President in a landslide. As a result, some ethnic Kartulians consider their ethnic group to be somewhat superior within the nation. The country has remained peaceful domestically, though the 21st century has seen the rise to prominence of a Zoroastrian fundamentalist political party, creating rumours of unrest.
Interesting Fact:  The CF elected its first female president in 2012, Zohal Akhoian.

Languages: Wide variety of local languages, but Arabic is used as the language of government and most people can either speak it or an Arabic creole based on their local language.
Religion: Islam is the state religion, but a fairly large number of synthetic fusions of Islam with other religions can be found, of which the largest is Buddhislam, followed by about 25% of the population. Buddhislam considers the Buddha to be one of the pre-Mohammedean prophets of Allah and Nirvanna is the state of perfect union with Allah. Only about 15% of the population does not profess some form of Islam, tho only 30% profess a non-syncretized faith, roughly two-thirds Sunni, one-third Shia. Syncretized Islam developed in Sulu from a combination of tolerance of such syncretized religions combined with a hefty jizya imposed upon those who do not convert to some form of Islam. (Summary: Buddhislam 25%, Sunni Islam 20%, Shia Islam 10%, Other Islamic blends 40%, non-Islamic 15%)
Level of Technology and Development: Moderate
History: The Sultanate of Sulu was able in this timeline to play the competing European powers against each other to not only maintain its independence and influence, but to expand it beyond its OTL historical limits. In addition, Buddhist missionaries from Pagan reached the area at about the same time as Islamic ones did.
Interesting Fact: The Sultanate was the first majority Muslim country to abolish use of the death penalty.

Official Name: La Grande République d'Élodie
Common Name: Élodie
Territorial Description: Southern Australia, all of Victoria & Tasmania with south SA and NSW  territory in Antarctica.
Capital: Hélène (OTL, Melbourne)
Government: Parliamentary Republic (A president is ceremonial only and on reccomendation from the Government can dissolve Parliament and call elections)
Head of State: Président Matthieu Marinot
Head of Government:  Premier Ministre Stéphanie Grandin
Level of Freedom: Very high
Population: 32.4 million
Language: French
Religion: 63% Roman Catholic, 29% Irreligious, 8% others.

History: Settled by French explorers in 1643, the state has been prosperous ever since due to its large gold, oil and coal deposits however in recent years major efforts have been made to diversify industry. Named after Princess Elodie of France the region has always had close cultural ties to the European mainland but after the uniting of Kingdoms the state rejected all English immigrants and declared independence, after twelve years of war Independence was finally reached in 1811. In it's early years it was a large hot spot for French immigrants however with relaxed immigration laws countless other people from around the world are flocking to claim a piece of the resource reach lands.
Other interesting facts: Owns largest chunk of Antarctica, highest intake of Asylum seekers world wide. Aboriginal culture has largely been ignored by the government as they consider it up to the French-English to recognise they massacred the Aborigines not the current government.

Official Name: Revolutionary Obregulan Republic of Selva
Common Name: Selva, the ROR, the Obregulans
Territorial Description: Originally, the area between the Marcellan River [Amazon River] and 19°S. Later extended almost to the Andes, 7°N, and further South.
Capital: Ramos, formerly called San Tadeo, near OTL Recife
Government: Single-party Obregulan state. (Similar to OTL Communism)
Level of Freedom: Medium-to-low. Elections above the local level are often rigged, and always confiend to the ruling Obregulan Party. Speaking out against the government is strictly forbidden and often results in mysterious death. The government does ensure that everyone's basic needs are met, however.
Population: 226,103,000. Almost everyone is triracial (European, Native, and African) and a shade of medium brown, although there are many monoracial first-generation immigrants from other Obregulan countries.
Languages: Selvobregulan, an artifical language is the only language taught in schools, is understood by 97% of the population. Around 15% speak a second language, generally Castilian, French, or Latin.
Religion: Officially atheist. Because religion was important to so many people, the Church of the Holy Flock was created as an Obregulan alternate to the Catholic Church, which is otherwise identical, except with government-appointed bishops and priests. Many people did not realize this overnight switch had occurred, until the new church was ingrained. Underground Catholic and other Christian groups exist, but are persecuted.
Level of Technology and Development: Medium-to-high. The government has always put a high priority on funding scientific research. As the only Obregulan country with notable universities, the greatest minds of the Obregulan world generally wind up there.
History: Castile established the colony of Santa Cruz (Holy Cross) on the coast of OTL Brazil in the 1500s. The colony was known for sprawling slave-labor sugar plantations run by a few filthy rich planters. It revolted from the Kingdom of Castile in 1757 along with its Northern cousins, but for very different reasons. It was not moved by liberty or justice, but simply wanted to pocket more money rather than giving it to the crown. Santa Cruz achieved independence in 1769. The planters of course didn't fight for themselves, but sent slaves, Natives, and poor whites to fight and die in their name. Santa Cruz continued to be the major world provider of sugar for over 100 years, but class distinctions became more ingrained. Only the rich white men could vote - not poor whites, and certainly not Natives or blacks (slavery wasn't abolished until 1889). The government did little anyway, other than fund a military police to wipe out dissent. The oppressive oligarchy had one of the highest standards of living in the world, while 98% of the country lived in squalor. The oligarchy was able to repel revolts of the people in 1893, 1902, and 1910 by swiftly and publicly executing the rebel leaders and scaring the rest of the people back into silence. By 1918, Santa Cruz was a pariah on the international scene. Everyone loved the sugar, but even the monarchies of Europe were moving toward rights for the common man.
Inspired by the works of Obregulan [Rule of the Workers] writer Ronaldo Espirito, a friend and disciple of Johann Kreutzer (this world's Karl Marx) himself, the 1921 Santa Cruz revolution, with some covert international support, finally succeeded in overthrowing the oligarchy. Unfortunately, it inspired a reign of terror as every planter, merchant, banker, or otherwise wealthy voter who couldn't escape in time was executed, and their wealth was divided amongst the people. The new mob rule set up a new Obregulan-inspired government where all were equal ... so they said. Really, this new government was full of corrupt power-hungry Rebel generals who flipped sides to seize power, or upper middle class skilled laborers who just had it out for the rich, or people who legitimately believed in Obregulanism until they got drunk with power. Yes, this government was more attentive to the basic needs of the poorest people, but as the years went by it was more and more corrupt. It abolished all religious-inspired or European names for cities and government buildings, replacing them with new ones. Santa Cruz was no more - it's now the Revolutionary Obregulan Republic of Selva. The capital is now named Ramos for the lead revolutionary, not San Tadeo [St. Thaddeus].
By 1930, Obregulan ideals had spread to the surrounding areas (domino theory?), inspiring the pre-existing independence movements in the Aragonese colony of Providència to the South and the Tawantinsuyu [Inca] protectorate to the West. Selvan guerrilas even helped fight in the wars, and in 1933 Aragon officially withdrew from [South America]. The Tawantinsuyu set up their own Obregulan republic, but Providència was added (not entirely by choice) directly into the Revolutionary Obregulan Republic, as were the interior rainforest areas formerly part of Aragon. At this same time, the former French colony of Saint-Henri was added into the ROR as well, having overthrown its oligarchical republic. The government began a policy of Mezclando, where all people were heavily encouraged to marry a person of a different ethnic background, in order to mix the diverse Castilian, Latin, French, English, African, and various Native populations into a more homogeneous group with no obvious differences. It insisted that schools teach only the newly-created Selvobregulan language so that the next generation would always be able to communicate. It abolished all religion, save the Catholic-esque Church of the Holy Flock for those unwilling to become atheist. However, dissent was not generally tolerated, and criticizing the government usually meant death. People were encouraged to report any neighbor or acquaintance they suspected of being disloyal to the state, creating a culture of paranoia.
In the 1950s, a new generation of leaders denounced the corruption of the first set of leaders (not the revolutionaries, of course) and attempted to modernize the country. Significant investments were made in infrastructure - highways, trains, airports, etc. Scientific research was heavily funded, and the ROR began a space program. All of the academic might of the country was concentrated into the Obregulan People's University in Ramos, which to this day is the intellectual center of the Obregulan world. Several poor, decolonized countries fell to Obregulanism, and the ROR and Aragon fell into a Cold War of sorts in the 1950s that still lasts. More generally, Aragon represents the "old order" of monarchy and Euro-domination that the ROR and Obregulan countries resent, while democratic nations like Scotland, Castile, and the [North American] states find themselves caught in the middle. Each generation of Selvan governments has been less corrupt and paranoid than the one before, but experts believe there is little chance for free elections anytime soon. Which is unfortunate, since the current Obregulan government would likely win a clear majority in a completely fair election anyway. By now, the "don't criticize the government" rule is so engrained in the culture that it doesn't really have to be enforced much.
Interesting Fact 1: The ROR has never formally fought a war with anyone, but Selvan arms and guerrillas have been involved in virtually every Obregulan revolution.
Interesting Fact 2: One way the ROR stays at the forefront scientifically and culturally despite its poor economy and somewhat repressive government is its policy of identifying the best and brightest young adults of all Obregulan nations and bringing them to Selva permanently for university or just to live. This of course is a detriment to the other countries.

Oops.  I'll fix that to say Espirito was inspired by Kreutzer.  Perhaps Espirito is this world's Lenin analogue.

I have an idea for a claim, but I probably won't be able to post it until tomorrow night.  I'll try not to make it so long this time Cool

Feel free to go ahead of me, but please don't use the Inca/Tawantinsuyu area.

Official Name: State of the Heavenly Kingdom on Earth
Common Name: Siberia
Territorial Description: roughly what we would in otl refer to as Siberia.
Capital: New Jerusalem (ca. 150km downstream from OTL Yakutsk)
Government: 451 legislators elected to five-year terms; their decisions can be vetoed by the Russian Orthodox Church (usually referred to as the "Siberian Orthodox Church" to avoid confusion with the decidedly less tyrannical ROC seated in Moscow)
Level of Freedom: Theocratic hellhole
Population: 43.5 million (almost entirely East-Slavic)
Languages: Old Church Slavonic is the official language, although Moscovian, Plescovian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, etc. are also widely spoken.
Religion: almost entirely Siberian Orthodox
Level of Technology and Development: Low
History: Starting in the mid-16th century, Lithuania had used Siberia as a dumping ground for criminals, subversives, and the like. With the ascension of Grand Duke Narimantas in 1662, that population gained another subgroup -- non-Catholics. Millions of Russian-Orthodox and Jewish families were given a choice between conversion and exile. Those who went east had a horrendous death rate; those who remained did not fare much better, at least until Narimantas's son Švitrigaila, who was far less distrustful of the converts, came to power the following decade.
The policy of dumping non-Catholics in Siberia remained, though, and the population of Siberia at the time of the collapse of the Lithuanian Empire was largely composed of deeply religious Russian Orthodox people with a burning hatred for the Lithuanian government. And so, in 1823, they declared the independence of the SHKE, which is virtually identical today to how it was then (with some exceptions, including the expulsion of Jews, mass emigrations of comparatively more liberal-minded people, various peripheral territories lost over the course of five wars, and the occasional permitted technological advance)
Interesting Fact: Siberia's ongoing nuclear program is causing tremendous concern worldwide, and neighbouring countries have been quietly preparing an invasion.

Official Name: United Republic of India
Common Name: India
Territorial Description: India, Nepal, and Bali (primarily)
Capital: New Delhi
Government: Parliamentary republic
Head of State: President Sunder Vijay
Head of Government: Prime Minister Hitesh Rajiv
Level of Freedom: High
Population: 487 million
Languages: No official language.  Hindi (43%); Sanskrit (35%); Urdu (18%); Various regional languages (3%); Others (1%)
Religion: No state religion.  Hinduism (68%); Islam (14%); Buddhism (13%); Christian (2%); Sikh (1%); Jainism (0.6%); Others (0.4%)
Level of Technology: High.  The government has prioritized low taxes and limited regulation to attract business, and many multinational corporations have been established there.  Several major universities are also located there.
History: In the late 16th and early 17th century, Emperor Sidarth attempted to wage a series of battles to gain control of all Hindu territory, and succeeded only at conquering Bali and Nepal.  In the 18th century the English and French established colonies along the coastal areas, and despite attempts by the natives to drive them out, the state is currently on good terms with both.  In 1913, an uprising led to the overthrow of the imperial rule, and a parliamentary republic was officially declared.  The following year a constitution was drafted that included voting rights for men 21 and over.  In 1942, women were given the right to vote despite major opposition from many religious Hindus, and in 1954, after a movement by 18-20-year old activists, the voting age was lowered to 18.
Other Interesting Facts: Has been somewhat successful at controlling its national debt as part of its focus on economic growth.  While many different ethnicities exist, the nation has only elected one Prime Minister that is not of Indo-Aryan descent.

Official Name: Obregulan Republic of Tawantinsuyu
Common Name: Tawantinsuyu
Territorial Description: similar to OTL Peru and Ecuador
Capital: Cusco
Government: Single-party Obregulan state. The national government is run almost entirely by a 12-member Grand Council, whose members are chosen entirely by the corrupt higher-ups of Tawantinsuyu Obregulan Party. The ROR has an unofficial veto power of Tawantinsuyu government actions.
Level of Freedom: Medium to low. Speaking out against the government or Obregulanism is not allowed, nor is religious proselytizing.
Population: 41,891,125. Almost entirely full Native, as Aragonese overlords rarely intermixed with non-noble natives. Immigration is allowed, but is uncommon.
Languages: Pan-Quecha is the official language and is understood by almost everyone. Latin is illegal, except in a historical/academic context. Selvobregulan is the most common second language (18%), as are the languages of the other bordering countries.
Religion: Officially atheist, although the government redefined traditional mythology to conform to Obregulan ideals for those unwilling to become atheist. The ROR operates a few Churches of the Holy Flock as well.
Level of Technology and Development: Medium to low. Cusco and a few other cities are well-developed, but the nation is lacking in infrastructure.
History: Tawantinsuyu was not invaded by any European power in the early 1500s like in OTL, but by 1600, Aragon, through political intrigue and a lot of bribes, had essentially turned the empire into a vassal state. The Inca nobles and Latin governors lived a fancy life and began neglecting the needs of the people.  A rebellion was put down harshly in 1680, and the Latins clamped down hard, beginning forced conversions and general misery for the Native population. For nearly 250 years, Aragon and their Inca noble collaborators ruled with an iron fist, but in the 1920s, inspired by the Revolutionary Obregulan Republic, the Tawantinsuyu Rebellion went hot. Aragon might have negotiated, after the Cusco Massacre of 1928, in which dozens of Latin governors and Inca nobles were slaughtered, Aragon sent in the troops. After 5 years of bloody stalemates in Tawantinsuyu and elsewhere on the continent, Aragon's new emperor Alfonso IV decided to withdraw from the continent completely and leave it to its fate. Any remaining Latin or Inca noble who remained was evacuated, and the Tawantinsuyu set up an Obregulan republic.
The Tawantinsuyu spent most of the 20th century as the ROR's right-hand-man and attack dog, often sending troops to keep order in the peripheral, unimportant Obregulan countries that the ROR didn't really care about. This arrangement has caused the Tawantinsuyu economy and standard of living to fare better than the typical Obregulan country, although neither are really that high.
Interesting Fact: During the Tawantinsuyu Rebellion, the rebels decided to destroy almost every Aragonese and Inca noble historical site, to symbolize how these oppressions were over. Historians to this day are quite annoyed at this fact, and even the modern Tawantinsuyu Obregulan Party condemns those actions.

Official Name: Kingdom of Kongo
Common Name: Danish Kongo
Territorial Description: much of the Democratic Republic of the Congo except the north and east, Zambia, northern and eastern Angola
Capital: Kongohavn
Government: Constitutional Monarchy
Head of State: King Josef Edvard II of the House of Oldenberg-Kinlaza
Mostly independent, but shares a common Constitutional Court with one judge appointed by the governments of Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Pomerania, Kongo, Java, and Samoa.
Currency: Danish krone
Level of Freedom: High
Population: 84 Million
Languages: Danish is the official language with about 10% fluent only in that language, 20% fluent in Danish and another language, 50% some facility in Danish, 20% unable to speak Danish
Religion: No state church. 40% Reformationist, 30% Roman Catholic, 30% Other
Level of Technology and Development: Moderate, roughly equivalent to that of OTL China.
History: Danish merchants established trading links with the Kingdom of Kongo during the 16th Century which led to increasing involvement in local affairs, eventually leading to the establishment of a formal protectorate in 1804 and annexation in 1875. In the aftermath of PE3, the Danish realm was reorganized as a set of independent kingdoms with a common head of state.  However, when the third son of Queen Elisabeth, Prince Josef Edvard married Princess Marie of the House of Kinlaza, which had ruled Kongo before annexation, it was decided to make the Kingship of Kongo a wedding present in 1981 to the couple with Elisabeth and Josef Edvard I's two older brothers abdicating their rights to the Kingship of Kongo and Josef Edvard renouncing his rights to reign in the other Danish realms. The current king, Josef Edvard II, took the throne in 2011 when his father abdicated in his favor.
Interesting Fact: The primary problem facing Danish Kongo is occasional guerrilla raids launched across the Kongo River from the Obregulan Republic of the Kongo, which the Obregulans deny being responsible for.
