Support for Same Sex Marriage has reached a critical mass in the US.  It's unstoppable now.

Does really look like it, yeah. Didn't expect that to happen quite so fast.

And they're all still behind Portman. That makes me really sad.

And unlike McCaskill, he's up for election in 2014.

Hate to say it, but you might be a little too partisan. I couldn't care less as long as equality is legislated soon.

I really don't see this becoming an issue for him.

He'll still be perfectly safe.

Great. Yeah, I generally think in terms of evolutionary time, which is forever. Political time, though, is far shorter, but even for political time the shift on this issue for the better has been near overnight. Next is the death penalty.

Oh, don't get me wrong, it's not to say I'm unhappy that they came around to it. I just find it questionable that McCaskill and Warner felt the need to wait so long despite having far less to lose than Portman.

Any Dem thinking of running for POTUS has to support SSM. It is a new must have like being pro-choice.

I suspect we are seeing this flurry of announcements because of the upcoming Prop. 8/DOMA case at the Supreme Court.  If centrist Democrats in swing states like Warner and McCaskill are on board, marriage equality really has become the default position within the Democratic Party and a litmus test for our presidential candidates.

44 U.S. Senators now back same-sex marriage.  We're getting closer to a majority.

Casey's been disappointingly silent on this, though I suspect he support same-sex marriage despite being nominally pro-life. I could see Toomey being a closet supporter as well; he's socially right-wing, but he's always been economically-oriented.

I think Casey supports it, but I don't think Toomey does.

I think Casey supports it, but I don't think Toomey does.

Toomey seems like one of the earlier Republican SSM adopters, because (1) the position will work in Pennsylvania come re-election time, and (2) Toomey is pro-megabusiness, and the megabusiness community generally wants SSM.

Oh cool, according to that wiki link and the corresponding page of gay marriage opponents, a plurality of Senators now support SSM (43 in favor, 41 opposed).

Oh cool, according to that wiki link and the corresponding page of gay marriage opponents, a plurality of Senators now support SSM (43 in favor, 41 opposed).

UPDATE

I sperg'd out and actually researched it. Actual breakdown is as follows:

Democrats:
45 Supporters
6 Opponents (Donnelly, Manchin, Heitkamp, Johnson, Nelson, Pryor)
4 Ambiguous (Casey, Hagan, Landrieu, Tester)

Republicans:
1 Supporter (Portman)
42 Opponents
2 Ambiguous (Collins, Kirk)

Notes:
  • I counted Carper, Kaine, and Rockefeller as supporters; they haven't explicitly endorsed gay marriage, but have made statements that make their beliefs somewhat obvious (and all three signed onto an amicus brief arguing that DADT be overturned in full)
  • Hagan and Tester both sound like they'd be obvious supporters of gay marriage if they didn't have reelection concerns
  • Landrieu avoids making any statements on the issue at all costs
  • Casey looks to be in the middle of an "evolution" on the issue and is clearly hoping the Supreme Court solves everything so he won't have to make any difficult votes
  • Donnelly sounds like he's beginning an "evolution" of his own
  • Heitkamp would probably support gay marriage if she was from a liberal state; the other five Democratic opponents appear to genuinely oppose it on principle

Also here's a map!

30% shade means one Senator from the state has an ambiguous position. Gray states have one Senator in support and one opposed. (errors possible, I made the map pretty quickly)

anyone want to come up with a list of Democratic senators who don't support or havent came out in support yet of gay marriage? I assume Mancin is one.

Actively opposes it:
Casey (but he's awesome on every issue besides abortion /sarcasm)
Donnelly
Kaine
Machin
Tester

Not for it, but not actively opposed:
Heitkamp
Casey
Nelson
Carper
Hagan
Pryor
Landreiu
Johnson

What about Cowan?  I assume he supports SSM, but has anyone ever asked him about it?  He was appointed to the Senate about two seconds ago, so he might not have ever said anything about it.  (And Wikipedia's list of supporters doesn't include him.)
