What are your favorite elections?

Mine:

Napoleon (JCP) defeats Marokai (RPP) June 2011

Its not every day a newer Atlasian defeats a seasoned veteran. The RPP incumbent retired, making it an open seat. Marokai originally ran as the UDL candidate (party he founded) but switched to the RPP to get votes (he will dispute this most likely). Eventually President Tmth gets involved with Invaligate (look it up) but Napoleon prevails by a single vote.

Kalwejt (JCP) defeats Junkie (RPP) September 2011

Junkie was basically the prooltotypical moderate hero but in reality parroted the RPP party line. The JCP struggled to find a candidate because it was considered a guaranteed loss but Kalwejt was prodded out of hibernation by prominent JCP Senators and achieved a surprise four vote victory, adding to the JCP majority. This was the first national election where the new Left in the Northeast was able to flex its muscle. The seat was open because Homelycooking left the forum instead of accepting his Senate seat, an action that left many disappointed and upset.

Snowguy/Bacon King (JCP) defeats Duke/Cinci (RPP) October 2011

This election was really the culmination of two parties that desperately wanted to win and didn't like each other at all.  Probably the strongest ticket either party could have put up at the time. Notable was President Polnut voting against his own VP. The RPP attacked the Winfield/Jbrase ticket as a spoiler, which made no sense considering we have IRV, but it may have backfired as Winfield's supporters tipped the balance in favor of Snowguy and many reported being turned off by the RPP ticket's attacks.

Nathan (JCP) defeats Cinci (RPP) November 2011

Talk about poetic justice, Snowguy's at large seat opens up when he becomes President and we get another election with strong candidates. This time, there truly was a spoiler. With a vote of 48-48, Nathan wins due to having more first preferences. Many conservative RPPers preferenced Yelnoc of the Silly Party ahead of Cincinnatus. This was the last national election before dissolution, although Polnut defeated Clarence in January while the dissolution vote was still being held.

Note: I didn't pick these because I was happy that someone lost. I liked these elections because they were close and hard fought and there was a political outcome at stake in each of them.

The Lief v. PiT election was glorious.  February 2011 was the worst election, ever.

I was going to link you to this thread, glad you found it. Feb 2011 was my first election but I was a zombie at the time so I only know from hearing from others and reading old threads. But basically the left was consumed in personality politics, Oakvale agreed to be Marokai's VP and, of course, decided to run against him instead. Tmth apparently ran a campaign entirely devoid of substance, as I seem to recall a fun belgiansocialist thread discussing (can't blame him- seems to be one of the better campaign strategies, up there with the "cornucopia of game reform gimmicks" strategy). And I don't remember hearing much about your campaign but I believe there was a nasty primary.

Tell us more about Lief vs Pit.

I now realize how long I have been involved in Atlasia, and I weep.

The Oakvale part I can't comment on, since I wasn't involved/don't remember.  Tmth's campaign wasn't controversial, but I think it wasn't devoid of substance, just nothing radical (again, my memory is poor in this area).  I remember the UDL primary.  It was vicious, between me and Marokai.  I'm not sure how it escalated so quickly, but I think it got really nasty after I sent an impolitic PM that criticized Marokai more than it should have.  He and I then traded barbs and insults which were beneath both of us.  I think it destroyed the UDL, which was a pity.  If you shift through the threads (as I did a few months ago), it's kind of shocking.  I'm still embarrassed by my behavior.  I backed down after losing the primary, but then Marokai left the campaign (I don't remember why, he hopefully can fill in the gaps), and I ran on a badly damaged ticket with Ogis (like McGovern post-Eagleton damaged) that finished third, I believe.  Tmth won a close campaign, and then made me SoEA after the election.

PiT v. Lief.  A magical campaign, with clear ideological differences, two strong campaigns run by good people.  It was just a fun campaign to watch unfold.  And, of course, it was extremely close in the final result - did PiT maybe lose by a couple of votes?  I voted for PiT, I remember.  It was really an incredible election.

It was a tie, but PiT lost because Lief had more first preferences. I remember that well.

Simfan vs. Myself was pretty passionate, or at least for myself it was. I was probably the most angry I'd ever been do to the extreme closeness, but in hindsight I greatly overacted.

I would have voted for you, had I known you. Believe it or not, I didn't even realize that election was close at all until a few weeks ago when I was trying to updated the wiki.

My 2012 Presidential run. Cheesy

And no, my campaign certainly wasn't "devoid of substance" - it might not have been as detailed as Marokai's, but then again, no one's platform is as substantive as his are. Tongue Anyone who makes that accusation on my campaign probably has to make the same accusation for 90% of other Presidential campaigns.

Dallasfan and I actually pretty much stayed on point the entire way through better than the other campaigns, with the goal to stay positive and friendly, letting the other campaigns self-destruct. It was a planned strategy from the beginning, and it obviously worked.

This was the thread I was referencing. I don't have an opinion, given that I wasn't following at all.

Haha, that was an amusing attempt to derail my campaign before the election - not as good as the kitten one, but still impressive. I don't remember Wormy being such an avid defender of me! Tongue

Gosh, I also forgot about my "Stormfront Thugs"...I'm surprised that wasn't used against me in the January smear campaign against me be a friend of mine in the Senate.

Lief vs. Pit (the first one) is probably my favorite and set the stage for a years-long era of Atlasia.

Defeating Marokai for the NE Senate seat was one of my greatest achievements, and I had to pull a lot of strings to make it happen, but he deserved it.

I'm pretty sure there were some at-large elections where I got the JCP to win more seats than it should have. First, keeping two seats during the first election with the UDL was great. Later on, winning multiple at-large elections by a fraction of a vote was fun.

One of the most interesting elections had have been when afleitch ran against Bacon King (February 2010.) I was quite the neophyte at the time, but Bacon King was projected to be the winner for much of the election, over the POP & RPP ticket of SPC/Brandon H. However, the last minute ticket of afleitch/Smid would prove to be the victor, and was a brief respite in what had been a long string of JCP victories.

Another interesting election would have to be the June 2011 Northeast Senate election. Disregarding my own unsavory involvement, the election was quite interesting because it featured a solid left-winger backed by a right-wing party against a center-left winger. Based on my own experience, there had been a lot of lobbying by right-wingers to deliver votes for Marokai, and ultimately the election was decided by a one vote margin.

I would also have to say that Inks' last gubernatorial bid was pretty interesting (the date escapes me but I believe it was in 2010.) Inks had been Governor for around a year, and Swedish Cheese managed to oust him by a solid margin after running an energetic campaign. Despite all of this, however, Inks won a seat to the Mideast Assembly via write-in in the same election.
