Let's say Joe Biden dies or resigns due to health issues. Who do you think Obama would nominate to be the VP replacement?

Possibly someone safe. Maybe a woman like Kathleen Sebelius.

But the new Vice President is not going to be someone who will be a candidate in 2016.

Technically, he wouldn't even need to do so.

Depending on how far into the term it happened, the post could simply be left vacant.

Actually, the 25th Amendment compels the President to nominate a new VP

Let's just say it happened right now. Biden dies in April 2013.

Hillary.

Actually, now that I think about it she would probably turn it down.

Continue on, folks...

True. She's better off as a former popular SoS who can run at right moment than losing this capital by becoming the Veep.

Exactly.

I figure it would end up being an elder statesman/woman who plans on or has retired already.

Good call: an experienced caretaker. I just can't see Obama risking nominating a VP-successor-in-waiting. Beside an obvious Republican obstruction to the max, there would be more or less open opposition from the Democrats, many of whom wants an open field for themselves.

Hmm, as of caretaker possibilities. George Mitchell seems like a dream candidate, the problem would be his very advanced, for a second in line, even interim, age and his health isn't very good.

Any other ideas?

Why do people still act like Bill Richardson is a credible figure in American politics?

To show how Bi-Partisan he is, he will pick Mitch McConnnell. Thank you, and good night.

Well in 2008 it was said it was a coin toss away between Biden and Evan Bayh, and it'd prolly be a decent choice, he's experienced, retired, and fairly popular.

Wouldn't he pick Kerry, he's the next in line after Boehner.

Leahy is next in line as PPT and if Leahy decides he won't be running for reelection in 2016, he'd be an excellent choice.
