The center-left breaking for Smith and liberal protest voice is ushering in Republicans. When the GOP shifts right, they'll all come home.

Smith has taken the lead again! Now we get to blame the Republicans for Vietnam!

Muahahahaha?

Not necessarily. If the election stays this close, the unpledged electors may get to play kingmaker.

And what a fun game that will be.

3rd Republican to win in a row... Who was complaining about eternal democratic dominance post-WW2?

With the fact that even a Democratic ticket as bad as this one can come two vote away from winning and that Republican tickets can only get weaker from now on...

I'd say it was only delayed.

Guys, X and I worked out a plan for Democratic hegemony starting in '68 that is contingent on Smith winning. If LBJ wins we'll either have a nasty primary or Bill Clinton, and I know a lot of liberals won't like that.

Probably should be the last election that Republicans actually win.

With both major party candidates within 2 points of each other and below 40%, I think the unpledged vote is critical here.

edit: and it's a tie now!

Wow. That is what I call a nailbiter.

Cathcon, from now on you should make the election results viewable before poll closure (although only after one has voted). It makes things much more exciting!

Will be very interesting to see how unpledged electors vote. Most of them were the anti-war left, so neither candidate really suits them.

It causes undue influence on the results though, typically.

I'd go with the Dems if forced to choose between them.

You're just doing this to get LBJ out of the way, aren't you?

I vote Chase............LBJ's anti-Civil Rights record at that point in time would've been a huge detractor. (He voted against the 1950's Civil Rights bills)

What's the point of voting for 'Unpledged Electors' then just saying who would have voted for anyway. Why not just bite the bullet and vote for a ticket? Meh, that's just me though.

Because we voted for unpledged to try to get the unpledged ticket (Fulbright/Morse) to win. Since he didn't secure a majority, we now have all these electoral votes we need to figure out what to do with.
