If there's one factor for which we Brits are (in)famous, it's the class system. As alive today as it ever was, being identified as, or proud for, your class separates us from almost all our European neighbours and probably all North American Colonial Cousins excepting older Canadians.

The BBC today asks people to find out where they lie on a new 7-level class chart. I'm "Emergent service workers"

Here's the test. It would be interesting to see what non-Britons answer to this Smiley

New affluent workers is what it told me I was...I may have been a bit too broad with the "people I know with these jobs" part...I'm gonna retake it and be a bit more narrow on my definition of "know".

From what I've got from Facebook, that's the most common. Owning your own house usually puts you into the next one up, but that's rare as hell these days.

I saw someone from my school was in the next one up and I felt TERRIBLY British.

There is a big flaw to it. Class seems to be determined by what property you have, who you know and what you like to do. It doesn't ask you about your job (which is the most obvious one) or education.

If I owned my own home I'd be a 'New Affluent Worker'; because however I choose to rent I'm considered to be in the lowest group, the Precariat where 'Jobs in this group include cleaner, van driver and care worker' and 'They tend not to have a broad range of cultural interests'; this is despite the fact my cultural interests chart scored quite high and diverse.

The original class survey on which this is based (which takes longer to complete; about 20 minutes) is here; https://ssl.bbc.co.uk/labuk/experiments/class/

This one asks more about your background, education, what papers your read etc.

Apparently I'm closest to the emergent service worker class. I'm poor but rich culturally. Pfft.

Same as Tik.

There is class in Australia, obviously, but income has absolutely nothing to do with it. It's about where you went to school, where your parents went to school, and where your kids go to school. If all three are in the top 25% of school by tertiary entrance rank, you're upper class. If all three are in the bottom 25%, you're lower class. Any variation within and you're middle class. Unless you're an immigrant, and then you're immigrant class.

I get 'Emergent Service Worker' if I change one of the multiple choice answers Tongue That makes more sense, but it's still oddly flawed.

because however I choose to rent I'm considered to be in the lowest group...

is that true?

I rent, and it put me in one of the middle classes.

Here is the description of my class group:

People in this group tend to mix socially with people similar to themselves
They prefer emerging culture, such as using social media, to highbrow culture such as listening to classical music
Many people in this group work in research, science and technical occupations
They tend to live in suburban locations, often in the south east of England
They come from largely middle class backgrounds

I tend to mix socially with people similar to myself.
I actually prefer classical music to using social media, so that's a little weird.  But I prefer jazz to classical, so maybe that's a little less "highbrow.)
I work in a scientific occupation.
I live in the suburbs in the southeast of something.  (in my case that something is Pennsylvania)
I come from a largely middle class background.

Very insensitive survey, but very British.  It told me I was a 'bloody w*g', whatever that is.

I'm surprised that the "traditional working class" is only about 14% of the population. I guess they've been declining in population?

If you include Affluent Workers, Service Workers, and the Precariat into the definition of "Working Class"...that's over 60% of the population.

I wouldn't count 'Affluent Workers' as working class though. Nor 'Service Workers'... although I'm sure some would definitely consider themselves as such.

Nobody under 50 could be working class(Thatcher destroyed it). They would either fall into Service or Precariat classes.
