This is exactly what I've been looking for! The failures of the Liberal Party have been made apparent, and it's time for a change. Despite my current affiliation with the Liberal Party, I will be be joining this new "Light Party". I realize I am currently in the running for Mideast Assembly, but my run for Assembly is not for party, but rather for both myself and the people of the Mideast.

If the Light Party will have me, I'll be glad to be a part of it! Cheesy

None yet.  We can get to those things once we begin the official drafting, which we, now that we're a major party, should get around to soon.

Speaking of which, how do you guys think we should format our platform?  Paragraph style like Labor, or bullet style like Liberal?  Labor uses paragraph style and has been a very successful party, as we know, but a bullet list of positions would make our platform comprehensive and simple.

I'd think we could do both: large bullet points with our position clearly stated in bold, with smaller paragraphs below each clarifying and expanding.

Since we're still a small party, now might be a good time to begin officially proposing and voting on our positions.  Because there are less people, we won't have to wait on as many people to vote on things.

I propose we use the list below to decide how we move forward.

  • Economic policy
  • Social policy
  • Environmental policy
  • Education policy
  • Foreign policy & Immigration (this one might take a while)
  • Preamble
  • Final Vote

It's a good platform in general, but I am firm in my commitment to remain politically unaligned.

I'm going to start with a few of my proposals.

Rural Businesses and Communities
A prosperous agricultural economy is vital to the affordability of our food, the independence of our energy supply, and the security of Atlasia's rural communities.  Lightists support government policies that subsidize and aid small farms that feed the world community.  We support a strong farm safety net with increased availability of insurance and conservation programs, expanded Internet access, and infrastructure.  We believe that in order for the Atlasian economy to truly prosper, rural communities must enjoy similar benefits as urban ones.

Fiscal Responsibility
As Lightists, we believe that the people are best served by a government that proves it is capable of aiding its citizens and spending within its means at the same time.  We value balanced budgets that is accompanied by cuts in bureaucratic red tape, but all spending reforms must be implemented fairly and with concern for all members of our economy.  We must also pass budgets that are comprehensive and specifically address who and what they are allocating funds to.  We call on regional governments to pass amendments to their Constitutions requiring a balanced budget except in times of emergency, and a mindful distribution of funds each fiscal term.

Helping Poor & Working Families
Too many Atlasians live without a better hope for the future or are forced to work low-wage jobs to support their families.  We believe that while self-sustainability is a vital goal for working families, the government bears an important role in ensuring equal opportunity and maintaining a social safety net for those who need it.  That is why we support expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit, as well as developing a comprehensive approach to eradicating poverty by providing grants to urban and rural communities and empowering local governments to address their constituents' needs, for we believe that reform can best be achieved by tackling and critically analyzing policies established at the local level.

Feel free to critique it.

Someone should propose our position on workers' rights.

I don't get it.

How do you guys differ from the labor and liberal parties? If you don't like liberal or labor, please state it clearly in the public view and why you feel that way. Thanks!

A few proposals from me:

Taxes

The Light Party believes a heavy tax burden is hard for hard working citizens. The Light party in most cases will vote against tax raises except for economic emergencies. If more money is needed for welfare programs, the first priority should be to scale down other programs.

Military Intervention

The Light Party is opposed to military intervention except to prevent genocide or to respond to a foreign attack. The Light Party believes that oversea military installations should be reviewed and the ineffective installations should be removed.

Freedom of Speech

The right to Freedom of Speech for all citizens is considered fundamental. Censorship of our airwaves is not the job of the government, and the right to protest is in all non-violent cases protected, except in cases where it conflicts with a personal right to privacy.
