Riverside County is one of the most ancestrally GOP counties in California, second only to Orange. In the election data I have (which goes back to 1920) the county has had a Dem PVI only once: in 1972. It was one of the few counties on the west coast to go for Hoover in 1932 and nearly went for Landon in 1936.

I can see the reason for the county's republicanism in the past fifty years, but I had always thought that Riverside County was an okie stronghold and therefore would have originally been dem leaning.

Hard to say. Riverside County was mostly a place for commuters to Los Angeles for a long time, IIRC. ie not much of an economy of its own. Tongue

There aren't that many rich areas in Riverside County, especially when compared to SD, OC and LA counties.

Lots of religious people and truck driving, Budweiser drinking white people who love their guns. I'm totally generalizing but I have family who live in that area. They were some of the only people on their block to have Obama stickers on their vans.

The county is trending Dem due to the high Hispanic population.

This was a demographic that usually voted for Democrats(at least downballot) before the early 1990's.
