Maybe it was a last minute tribute to Margaret Thatcher but tucked in on pg 51 of Obama's budget was this:

the administration says it “intends to undertake a strategic review of options for addressing TVA’s financial situation, including the possible divestiture of TVA, in part or as a whole.”

As you could imagine socialist and commies aren't taking this lying down

http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2013/apr/10/obama-administration-plans-strategic-review-of/?partner=yahoo_feeds

Lamar Alexander (Socialist) TN said

“This is one more bad idea in a budget full of bad ideas”

Alexander countered by saying that selling TVA to a for-profit company would not guarantee reduced electric bills in the Tennessee Valley, “which should be the overriding objective — and it could lead to higher electricity rates.”

Also coming out in opposition is Mo "Kim Jong" Brooks (Godless Commie) AL.

Obama wouldn't do anything remotely like that, but the next Pub President should look at it. Privatization never really caught federal fire in the US like in the UK or even here in Canada.

Well, TVA is really the only entity like that held by the Feds, it's hilarious to see all these phony  Republicans defending socialism.

A shame, TVA definitely should be privatized.

I thought there were a few others in the Power Marketing Administration but they don't seem as big: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Marketing_Administration

I remember President Bush had a proposal to raise raises rates for BPA that never went through after the uproar: http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=20050301&slug=bonneville01m

Is there any reason TVA should be privatized? There doesn't seem to be any justification for it.

There was never nearly as much stuff to privatize.

Our government has never been involved in running things that even Bernie Sanders would likely agree it shouldn't. We never had nationalized coal mines or telecoms or oil companies.

It is funny how much of a third rail the TVA is. Barry Goldwater openly talked about privatizing it and performed poorly in the Upper South, even as he swept the Deep South. Ronald Reagan talked about privatizing it in 1976 and that is credited with helping Gerald Ford win the Tennessee and Kentucky primaries.

Terrible decision, we should instead create several more agencies like this.  Like CVA(Columbia Valley Authority), MVA(Missouri), OVA(Ohio) etc...

Privatization for privatization's sake is something that, for whatever reason, makes me super angry. It is one of the dumbest things.

Obama could probably get a lot of his agenda passed if he would just pretend to want the opposite.

It would be were it not for the fact that it's generally a cover for the looting of public resources. T. Dan Smith was quite correct when he noted (with an appropriate degree of ironic self-deprecation) that many Thatcher-era privatisations were effectively legal versions of what he'd been sent to prison for.

That's right!  As well as a plethora of new government agencies for all manner of industries and public services.  Private companies should be avoided whereever possible as they are damaging to the public.

Goddamnit, Obama. I'm really starting to regret that vote for you I cast. Hopefully this doesn't turn into anything. Privatization would make my electric bills shoot into the ing stratosphere.

Because they don't like the idea of people having cheap electricity. Some useless middleman should be able to extract profit out of the people of the Tennessee Valley.

Nothing will.  That South Carolina has not even debated selling Santee Cooper (our own in-state version of the TVA) should tell you all you need to know about the prospects of selling the TVA.

You won't get an answer.  One person is barely out of junior high school so they can't speak intelligently about any business let alone a multibillion dollar enterprise and another isn't even American and has doubtfully done any sort of in depth all encompassing analysis of the business.

I personally can't make a strong statement either way because I can admit I don't know the specific pros and cons of the broad universe of choices that are implied by the word "privatize."
