A very difficult question to answer, and one that requires coming to a conclusion as to the nature of Christ in order to answer.

Crucification was a method of execution that induced more suffering than any now used about the world, so I'd say in all probability.

Of course, this is falsely assuming that Jesus and Christ are even arguably synonyms. Tongue

Tweed's question reminded me of Neshamah. They have some songs that talk about "the pain that Christ gave" (quote) and how we as humans are insignificant in how we can love or feel in comparison.

You should listen to them Tweed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQ1S7b0h7bg

Of course.  Crucifixion was a form of torture, so both the physical and emotional pain would be more than anyone can ever imagine.

Does that include other torture victims?

Crucifixion is pretty bad, but just think of poor old Damiens.

Maybe if it was a regular mortal, but would a deity experience physical and emotional pain in the same fashion as a human?

I just flashed back on the first chapter of Discipline and Punish.  Sad

Even if you take His existence and everything that happened to Him as 100% fact, He still wouldn't be the human who has suffered the most.  Think of the many thousands of people born into an abusing family where they are emotionally, physically and sexually abused for, say, 17 years before they are killed by one of their abusers.  Or every woman born into a Wahhabist family ever.  Jesus got to fish, build things with dad, travel internationally, have fun at Temple, be worshiped, etc.

He may very well have suffered more than anyone posting in or reading this thread, but certainly not more than any other individual ever.

It's impossible to measure something like that on any sort of tangible scale. If we took everything at face value we could say he suffered a great deal. But did he suffer more than the thousands of other Jews who were systematically worked to death, starved and eventually gassed at Auschwitz over a period of months and years?

Did he suffer more than Spartacus did when he was crucified (which was the most common method of execution in Rome)?

It's not something I feel one can put a tangible number on.

Did he suffer more than I did over the months when I had no home to go to and dealt with my own battles with depression, anxiety, obesity or what have you? (I would answer yes, he probably did suffer worse than I or anyone of us has, for the record)

Can suffering really be measured on some arbitrary scale? Rather shouldn't it be to look for ways to end someone suffering in the present and in the future rather than have a contest to see who suffers more now or in the past?

"Calvary was a pain, the nails were painful, and the hanging there, perspiring in the hot sun with the flies must have been a painful, awful experience. But one pain was bigger than the other, and it was the bigger pain that drove him to endure the littler pain. The smaller pain was the pain of dying, the greater pain was the pain of loving." -A.W. Tozer
