Should have mentioned this last week, but as you may or may not recall, at last year's RNC, Romney's people pushed through a few revisions to the primary process for 2016.  The most significant of these requires that every state holding a caucus makes their caucuses binding in delegate allocation.  So, you know how, in the Iowa caucus for example, on the Dem. side the results on caucus night actually determine the delegate allocation among the presidential candidates, whereas on the GOP side you have no idea what's going to happen with delegate allocation, because all you have is a straw poll, which may or may not relate to what later happens with the delegates?

Well, that's disallowed in 2016 under the rules that Romney pushed through last year.  All the caucuses on the GOP side have to be binding, just like the Democratic ones are.  So no Paul "ninja delegates" this time*.

Anyway, why do I bring this up now?  Because there was an effort last week by Paul-istas to repeal all the rule changes, and it failed miserably.  Was hoping for a detailed writeup by the FHQ blog, but so far all we have are his comments on Twitter:

* Granted, a Paul supporter could still lie about who they support, but their vote on the first ballot at the convention would have to go to whoever won the delegates from their state.

The only folks who wanted these rules changes was the establishment wing ie Mitt folks. These rules were FORCED upon the party. This decision was resoundingly booed at the convention and should be repealed immediately. This wasn't just opposed by the Paulites.

You're really advocating that the will of the voters ought be ignored when determining a presidential candidate? Wow.

Actually, the states determine how they elect delegates. It shouldn't be the RNC's business.

The Paulites can still block a nomination on the first ballot, and then use the ninja strategy on the second ballot, which was the 2012 plan all along, wasn't it?

That only works in a situation where one candidate doesn't already have a majority of delegates pledged to him on the first ballot.  And because all the delegates will now be pledged to someone on the basis of the primary or caucus vote, that's less likely to happen.

In any case, as I understand it, the new rules also give the candidates more control over who their own delegates are.  So to be selected as a Rubio delegate, for example, the Rubio campaign would have to select you, and they're only going to pick their most loyal supporters.

So Romney did some useful things for the party. Credit where credit is due, etc.
