Quincy Adams. Unfortunately, LaFollette didn't get to do much as a defeated candidate, while Quincy Adams has one of the more impressive post-defeat resumes.

What do you guys mean LaFollette didn't do much? He was one of the most influential senators in history.

He died right after he was defeated, while Adams went on to a very successful House career as one of the most ardent abolitionists. Unfortunate, but its how things turned out. Both were great men of their time, so it was a tough choice and this criteria seemed most appropriate given the subject.

And so, by some strange miracle, Robert La Follette has become the best defeated Presidential candidate!

Defeated when? He ran multiple times, 1924 was just the last one.
