Lol. Didn't he primary a moderate Republican back in the 80s? And now he sounds like the flaming liberal. The GOP's descent into madness has been so fast.

The guy he primaried, Jacob Javitts was one of those actually sort of liberal Republicans, who are obviously long gone. D'Amato was as far right-wing a Senator as you can possibly imagine being elected 3 times in New York State in the last 35 years. Only once did he win by more than a couple of points.

Have y'all been reading Dylan Byers' pieces about the broad media conspiracy to shame Senators? Gold.

It's ironic that after being successful in the '70s, '80s and '90s in large states like New York and Illinois by being the party of law and order, the GOP has more or less ceded this territory to the Democrats.

50 years ago, the idea that Democrats would be calling for background checks and keeping guns away from criminals and Republicans would be whining about assaults on civil liberties would be almost absurd.

Of course, in that time the GOP has gone from being a party that wants small, efficient government to being a party that doesn't trust the government at all, even to do things to protect public safety.

This steady glide into insanity continues.  Good on him for calling out his ridiculous comrades.

In some ways, his history is not all that different from that of Pat Toomey thirty years hence. Just with Specter being less liberal then Javits and not even attempting the primary in the GOP. Just like Toomey is now, D'Amato did a good job representing his state, while also still preserving his conservative principles.

Too bad Al D'Amato is a corrupt piece of sheiss.

I agree with him on this point, but lets remember his real legacy.

What kind of corruption? The usual NY thing, or worse?

The only legacy I am aware of regarding him is his reputation for being blunt and at times a real dick with his public commentary, which contributed partially to his defeat.
