It of course swung hard to Romney, but could any other of the Republicans have improved on his performance? I think the result had more to with voting against Obama than for Romney, but maybe Santorum or Gingrich could have done even better.

I think Santorum probably could, as he is far more believable as a cultural Conservative than Romney.

Probably Santorum, maybe Gingrich.  Huckabee probably could have too.

I honestly think Santorum would've broken 2/3. If in this alternate reality some scandal/crisis broke out and Obama lost decisively, Santorum could probably have cleared 70% with room to spare (ie, 72-73%).

The answer is definitely 'yes', but with different circumstances Romney himself could've done much better WV.

Possibly, but I think for all non-liberal WV'ers, coal far outweighed any thought of Romney being "out of touch".

I think Santorum would have destroyed in West Virginia.  2-1 give or take.

There were quite  a few Democrats that stayed home, most of them socially conservative. They would have probably felt more comfortable voting for Santorum.

I think Huckabee could've done better in all of the south considering he is native there, and maybe Santorum too with his socially conservative views. We'll see if WV continues it's anti-Obama feeling into the next presidency.
