This one is really getting on my nerves, both due to its blatant stupidity and the fairly obvious racial subtext of it. It clearly didn't work during and after the 2012 election, and only serves to make the right look unsympathetic and/or racist. If they throw this one away, it's a win for them and for me.

We can't make predictions, we can only hope.

Uh, probably never? That's always been a right-wing attack on working class voters.

The problem with that meme is twofold.  First, it is oversimplifying to say that's the only thing Democratic voters want, tho it certainly high on the priority list for many of them.  But also it is oversimplifying to imply that only Democratic voters have an interest in them.  So do most Republican voters; they just don't want to admit it.

Always? Nope. Ronald "Welfare Queen" Reagan invented it in the 1960s, and the effectiveness this line of attack in great part explains the Reactionary Right's success at undermining the New Deal's legacy in the past 40 years.

And factory tycoons during the Industrial Revolution blamed the working class for their profits being lower than desired.  The food stamps and welfare checks of today were the 8 hour work day and child labor laws in the past.

You're both kind of right.  Lief is generally correct.  Antonio is specifically correct.

And no... the right wing puppet masters will never drop it because it is their bread-and-butter to scare those who ignorantly think they can be like them (suburban whites and dumbs) into thinking those who understand they can never be like them, just wanting to get by (the working class, the working poor, minorities, first-generation immigrants, etc.) are lazy, inherently inferior, and out there to leach off everybody else.  Fear is and will always be the proper tool for any political entity that is selling their constituency a hot, steaming, self-serving plate of BS.

It's very clearly racially charged, and it's used in such a prevalent manner these days because a black man is President and the right thinks that blacks only vote for Obama based on skin colour or "welfare" which is simply untrue, considering Romney probably would've made wealth inequality (especially in terms of black vs. white) the highest it's been in recent years.

And the part about how giving out what you reactionaries call "free stuff" is actually just and good policy.

As someone who proudly calls himself a reactionary, most of the GOP isn't reactionary.

Everybody wants free things. If anything, the Democrats should start using this mantra against the Republicans just to prove its inanity.

The USA is a giant country, and one where politics, in general, is much more individualistic and parties are more 'vague coalitions' than other countries where parties have tighter controls over members' rhetoric and actions. So, some politicians will soon drop it, others will adopt it. Perhaps it will get less common, though as it's still very effective in many places I doubt it will disappear entirely anytime in the near future.
