62% Church (8/13), 31% Reagan (4/13), 8% Anderson (1/13) as of now.

Now it's 52% Church (11/21), 33% Reagan (7/21), 10% Anderson (2/21), 5% Clark (1/21).

I remember a time, from 1956-1964, when Democrats were complaining because of Republicans winning three elections in a row. This is the fourth election in a row that the Democrats have won. Can I officially start complaining now? Tongue

I maintain that Atlamerica has a way of surprising us.  It would not surprise me to see Perot win in either 1992 or 1996 (depending on who the Democrats and Republicans nominate).  Also, with the right candidate and political environment, a Republican could still win (especially if Democratic fatigue sets in).  I think the Pubs could've potentially won in 1980 with a Baker/Danforth ticket if Kennedy won the Democratic nomination (they'd have my vote had that been the case).  Also, everyone thought the Democratic hegemony would begin with FDR, then we thought it would begin in 1960, I am not so sure it is as done a deal as some folks seem to think.

If Republicans had nominated Anderson it would have been much closer. I'd have voted for him. But instead I voted for Church because Reagan needed to be crushed.

Voted Coolidge of course, although I would be happy with a Smith victory.

LaFollette and Debs are toxic to me. Tongue

Quite sure Debs will win though. What a travesty.

Meh, I don't think it would be worth it to nominate a moderate just to get a closer loss.

Good to see Reagan did worse than Ford. The moderation electability factor still holds true.

I hope that 1984 and 1988 will be more interesting that what we have seen so far (things have been really boring since the end of Margaret Chase Smith term)... 1992, of course, belongs to Perot, and I have the impression the Reform Party could be successful in this timeline as long as Pat Buchanan is not their nominee. Or we could get Presidents Jesse Jackson or Dan Quayle, just for fun.

The 1980 United States Presidential Election
Coming out of the convention, the Church campaign, with a newly united party, suddenly took several independents and pushing him into an unassailable first place position that he held throughout the campaign. Despite tickets taking votes from his left flank, and the Anderson ticket taking independents and an amount of liberal Republicans, Church was nonetheless able to create a coalition of farmers, minorities, Mid-Westerners, and North-Easterners to win a land-slide re-election.

President Frank F. Church III (Democrat-Idaho)/Vice President Birch Bayh (Democrat-Indiana) 494 electoral votes, 50% of the popular vote
Former Governor Ronald W. Reagan (Republican-California)/Senate Minority Leader Howard H. Baker, Jr. (Republican-Tennessee)   44 electoral votes, 27.8% of the popular vote
Congressman John Anderson (Independent-Illinois)/Former Ambassador Patrick Lucey (Independent-Wisconsin) 0 electoral votes, 11.1% of the popular vote
Mr. Edward Clark (Libertarian-California)/Mr. David H. Koch (Libertarian-Kansas) 0 electoral votes, 5.6% of the popular vote
Mr. Barry Commoner (Citizens-Missouri)/Mrs. La Donna Harris (Citizens-Oklahoma) 0 electoral votes, 5.6%
