I read a little on the interwebs about the border disputes, but I haven't found any explanation about why the Chinese (or even the Indians) care about the border here, outside of ego.  There doesn't seem to be any strategic or economic value to the area.

The most pointless conflict in the area actually doesn't involve China. India and Pakistan literally have lost thousands of lives fighting over a remote glacier that no one thought they'd care about. Coincidentally it's it's also right next to China.

So India said, "fine, we won't let our military put tents up on OUR SIDE OF THE BORDER, but we're going to leave a camera to make sure the PRC stays on their side"......

I'll give you one guess what happens next...

yep, you're right

The annexation one.  Just like the PRC is doing in the South China Sea and the Japanese Islands whose name escapes me at the moment.

...but what they're really doing is turning most everybody in the region against them.  Forcing them to form alliances with each other, and just as importantly, with the US and it's friends.

Water. Consider that the population of India will surpass China in 2030(?), and Pakistan sure isn't slowing down. Water = life. We don't have this problem on such a scale in the US.

You'd have to ask them for their motive, their actions seem short sighted and irrational to me.

They want to revive the old Middle Kingdom where they could bully and invade their neighbors with impunity. Hopefully, the US and the West will help defend these countries against ChiCom tyranny.

That would be mine as well. If I've understood Indian politics correctly, Congress relies heavily on the minority vote, somewhat similarly to how the Democrats do in the US.

The headwaters of the main rivers that feed the Subcontinent are up there, or near there anyway.

The shape of the "air defence zone" doesn't seem to make much sense. It begins by hugging closely to China's land border but then juts out wildly towards Japan.

As far as the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, the PLA seems to be falling sway to the extremely problematic notion that there is critical value (nationalistic or otherwise) in asserting claims over some very small islands whose value overall is much less than China's long term relationship with its neighbor Japan. The PLA also released a video a couple weeks ago basically accusing a bunch of Western foundations and moderate intellectuals in China of conspiring to bring about a 1991-style end to the PRC. Unfortunately, the US will have to respond vigorously to the new hard-line faction of the PLA.

Based on what I know of this, the Chinese claim to the Pinnacle Islands is extremely weak.  The historical record indicates that they were considered part of the Ryukyu Kingdom which is now part of Japan, tho for a long while the Chinese considered Ryukyu part of their Empire.  At most, they could be considered part of Taiwan and thus the concern of the ROC and not the PRC.
