The shape of the "air defence zone" doesn't seem to make much sense. It begins by hugging closely to China's land border but then juts out wildly towards Japan.
As far as the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, the PLA seems to be falling sway to the extremely problematic notion that there is critical value (nationalistic or otherwise) in asserting claims over some very small islands whose value overall is much less than China's long term relationship with its neighbor Japan. The PLA also released a video a couple weeks ago basically accusing a bunch of Western foundations and moderate intellectuals in China of conspiring to bring about a 1991-style end to the PRC. Unfortunately, the US will have to respond vigorously to the new hard-line faction of the PLA.
