I wish Obama would follow through on his promises.

He was just making a reference to Guantanamo.

Internment while evil and a very black mark on FDR (who should be every bit as judged by it as Jackson was by the Indian Removal Act), wasn't quite genocide level.

I was making a joke about the question itself being asked in this day and age.  Few would dispute that the Japanese American internment was one of the worst decisions our government ever made.

What was said that was worthy of editing Ernest?

What you quoted was expunged both in your post and the post it originated in, as was the portion of your reply that responded to the quote since I couldn't think of a good way to edit it without alluding to the deleted quote.

Inexcusably evil, though by far outweighed by all the good FDR has done.

Replied via PM.  If you wish to make that PM public, save for the quote of your original post, feel free.

I think it's wrong to call this America's Holocaust, but deleting that comment and the responses saying why it's wrong seems weird...

A stain on FDR's otherwise illustrious Presidency.

Racist.  German-Americans and Italian-Americans were not interned, because they were white.

Yes. And we still had Jim Crow laws back then too. This was before Civil Rights.

Racist? Yes. Terrible? Yes. But not horrific.

Well that and there were, as I'm sure you know, many many many millions more of them....but if it fits your inner narritive to blame it on "whiteness", knock yourself out.

...and wops aint white.

It was both.  Race did play a role, and if you look at immigration history, you'll see that Asians did face more difficulties than immigrants from Europe.  It is difficult not to conclude that this added an element of prejudice that Germans and Italians did not face.

It was bad, but certainly not the worst decision the US has ever made, and arguably not as bad as bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which did kill around 3000 US nationals.

Seriously?  I'm sure you've heard the arguments against this position, how do you hand wave them all away?

Unless you're one of those that just KNOW the Japanese were going to surrender in just a few more days...their actions and statements to the contrary do nothing to change your mind?

I said arguably. The Soviet Union was going to declare war on Japan regardless of the bombs in early August 1945, which could be a big factor in the Japanese surrender.

Militarily, no.  Diplomatically, maybe.  The Japanese had been hoping the Soviets might be used to secure a negotiated peace.

Abhorrent. It was not FDR's best moment, not to mention that I think Korematsu is probably the single worst decision handed down by the Supreme Court. I put more blame on SCOTUS for not stopping a blatantly unconstitutional act.

I don't see how anybody could say that wasn't a mistake.

Dropping the atomic bombs was the right decision, in my mind, because if we hadn't done that, the Japanese probably wouldn't have surrendered as soon, and the war in the Pacific would have gone on indefinitely, with potentially many more lives lost than at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  While it wasn't ideal, it was the quickest and simplest way to end the war and minimize future losses for both Japan and the United States.
