I'm thrilled by the excellent first two games of the Swiss team. First they beat Sweden, and now the Canadians in a penalty shootout. Other teams that had a reasonable successful start to the tournament are Finland, Russia and the US.

No, after all it isn't the first time the Swiss were able to beat Canada in a big championship. Wink

Yes, it's starting to become uncanny. I guess I'm going to enjoy it as long as it lasts. I'm certainly glad the Swiss ice hockey federation has been patient with coach Simpson since it seems that his system is working really well now.

7-1 against Slovenia today. This is a very important win because the Swiss often play quite well against strong teams while they usually struggle against weaker squads. As a consequence, it looks like Slovenia will be relegated now.
In the Helsinki group, Germany beat Austria. Latvia is still waiting for the first win.

That's ridiculous.

Switzerland has Denmark, Norway, and Belarus left. Holy crap the Swiss are probably going to go undefeated in group play.

Well, Denmark generally defeats at least one favorite in each tournament, it could be the Swiss this time.

EDIT: And they lost on penalties against the Czechs, so they still owe us one "big game" kill. But well fought anyway.

Belarus is also good "favorite-killers".

The Helsinki group continues to surprise us. After going down to Latvia yesterday the Slovaks also lost against Austria, 1-2 after a penalty shootout.

And a 4-1 win against Denmark! The result suggests that the game was more one-sided than it was in reality, though. The Danish players are very strong physically and if the team were more efficient they could have won this and other close games in the tournament.

Thanks, but I think they would need more of our NHL players to do that. Its also a matter of speed and the pressure in NHL just makes you faster, also mentally.

Congrats, anyway. I like the colours and design of your flag Cheesy

3-1 win against Norway, great! The result may suggest otherwise, but Norway was weaker than Denmark. If the Swiss manage to beat Belarus they will finish first in the group and could face Norway again in the quarter-final. The match between Norway and the Czech Republic on Tuesday will decide which of the two teams reaches the next round. Coach Sean Simpson implied that he would rather avoid Canada and Sweden in the quarter-final so the Swiss will obviously do everything they can to win their last match.

And the unthinkable has happened! Switzerland finishes first in group Stockholm after the seventh straight win (4-1 against Belarus). They will face either the Czech Republic or Norway in the quarter final. Meanwhile, Slovenia and Austria will be relegated. That must be particularly bitter for Austria because they played quite well in some of their games.

That's huge for us. The last time Switzerland won a medal at a world championship was in 1948. I vaguely remember when the Swiss team reached the semi-finals in 1998, but the way they are playing in this tournament is much more impressive. The USA are obviously favored to win but anything can happen now.

I believe the last Swiss medal happened in a championship where only 3 counties took part. Cheesy

So, Sweden finished off the Finns and advance to the Final.

USA vs. Switzerland later today should be funny.
