Map other years' results and interpolations if you can.

2012:

2008:

2004:

Delaware 2012 is unconfirmed, but probably Romney.

Perhaps--we may be referencing different exit polls. BTW, is there a site for all 2012 exit polls in one place?

Obama wouldn't have been able to win Iowa if he didn't win the white vote.

As far as I know, us white people went Republican more in 2012 than 2004 in the national exit polls.  So, that just goes to show Romney's base turnout was a total disaster.

Or that whites in the South, parts of the Midwest and Great Plains, and Appalachia (increasingly) give such huge majorities to the GOP that it skews the white vote nationally; but in terms of swing states, the white vote is often either not Republican enough and/or not enough to carry the key states necessary to win the presidential election.

I still can't get over the fact that exit polling was cancelled for 19 states in 2012. Such a horrible decision, especially for states like Texas and Georgia.

Iowa whites are notoriously racist, so they voted for the Democrat.

These maps are astonishing. Would any campaign expert 20 or 30 years ago have guessed that a Democrat could win decisively while doing this poorly with the white vote?? It's incredible how much the electorate has changed.

All I can say is Democrats should thank God for the Immigration Act of 1965.

Fact is - Democrats literally wouldn't be a national party if you didn't get 90%+ of the black vote and 70%+ of the Latino vote on every occasion.

Which is why you'll shamelessly race-bait, because if you don't, you lose.

No, no. Democrats don't have to race bait. The Republicans do a great job of doing that for them

And of course the party that only wins a majority of one race's votes doesn't.

The Republican's problem with minorities has less to do with any instances of race-baiting than it does to racial insensitivity and just a general cluelessness about minority experience. Democratic race-baiting meanwhile is more often than not an intramural sport.  For the most part the partisan racial disparity is a matter of things like ideology, economics, history and geography.

Its certainly a dangerous double edged sword for Democrats - the growth of minorities seems like a bonanza, and it is, along with the demographic decline of the formerly dominant race, however, if Democrats lose the crucial 38-40% of the white vote that they currently receive, they're in trouble.  At anything below about 36-37% a yawning electoral deficit opens up for them, and it is curtains.

I'd rather have 90% of blacks, 70% of Hispanics and Asians, and 40% of whites.

Better than having 60% of whites and not much else.

The Democratic party definitely looks more like America than the Republican party, that's for sure.

New York has a lot of minorities, but still amazing that Obama got 63% of the vote there and lost the white vote.

I'm skeptical about the idea Obama lost the white vote in NY and he probably did better with NJ whites than the exit polls suggest from looking at town results (he improved from 2008 in many white working class areas). Upstate NY is very white and swung dem and NJ Obama probably got in the mid to high 40s, not the 43% the exits say.

Agreed. Especially considering that plenty of subsets of whites vote Democratic (gay, Jew, urban, single women, etc.)

What would the white vote look like in comparison with the national (white) average? Maybe this? (interesting how similar to the RL result)
