I said democratically elected of course so everyone just doesn't list totalitarian dictators, that'd go without saying.

Anyway, my least favorite leftist is Mbeki in South Africa. Even though I liked Mandela and the ANC while they were fighting apartheid, now Mbeki is effectively condeming a large portion of his population to death by supporting the idiotic and entirely discredited claim that HIV does not cause AIDS. If I lived in South Africa I would probably vote for the Democratic Alliance or whatever that party that most liberal whites are in is.

I really can't think of any.

South Africa is a mess, sadly.  It had what appeared to be a promising start for the post-apartheid era, but all the built in advantages that South Africa had over the truly pathetic countries that surround it are being lost.

South Africa is losing its most skilled and productive citizens because the government is not strong enough to tamp down the racial resentment that is driving them out.

AIDS is another incredibly serious problem, and African leaders in general have refused to face up to reality on this, or tell their people the truth.  It is incredibly sad - we are watching a whole continent die, and there little that we can really do except try to make it a little less painful.

With respect to AIDS, the real solution, though politically incorrect to western liberals, is to discourage bisexuality and encourage heterosexual monogamy.  In African culture, it is socially acceptable for men to cheat on their wives with young boys, who are considered the most delectable sexual treat by men.  The contract AIDS, then give it to their wives when they sleep with them.  The AIDS problem in Africa will not get better until this behavior is severely discouraged.

What do you think of Mugabe in Zimbabwe?

Chirac?

Of course I do not like Mugabe. He is a rabidly homophobic lunatic who is starving his country to death and driving it into the ground and is now starting to up repression of student dissidents and trade unions.

Well, I guess Chirac is right of center, at least in the French context, so I guess you're right, though I never thought of Chirac as having my philosophy.  You must be really clairvoyent - how did you know I didn't like him? [insert smilie - if I were smart enough to know how]

I really hate Mugabe, but I fear South Africa is moving in the same direction as Mugabe has taken Zimbabwe.

Back in 1998, I remember reading about how Mugabe was driving the white farmers from their land and giving the land to blacks, in the name of racial justice.  I remember saying to people at the time, "You mark my words, but the next thing that will happen there is a famine, when the people to whom he turns over the land don't know how to produce anything from it."  Of course, this is exactly what has happened.

Revolutionary leaders never govern well.  They are good at tearing down the old system, but terrible at building a new one that is any good.  Often, what they build is worse than the one they replaced, even for those they are supposed to be helping.  This is definitely the case in Zimbabwe, and I fear it will end up being the case in South Africa.  It will be very sad if the end result in South Africa is that the blacks there were better off under apartheid.  But that is probably what is going to happen.

Socialism, which ignores basic economic realities, and the propensity to put people into groups rather than look at them as individuals and assess their talents as individuals, is what has led to this very pathetic situation.  That, as well as the counterproductive desire to settle old scores.

Well, it's only a matter of time before the boers revolt. So, the worst Mbeki is, the sooner it will happen, so better Mbeki be really really bad. Wink
