From someone who's spent most of their life here. Curious to see if anyone, especially in the northeast, has ever been out here for a vacation or anything, and how we're perceived by the rest of the world.

Wikipedia link, for the lazy among you.

though I haven't been there it seems like a nice place... though the stereotypical southern New York politics would place it lower...

Never been there. It seems overrated (and of course overpriced), but I guess makes sense as a place to go if that is where "our crowd" from the Big Apple goes, for purposes of networking and socializing.

Depending on what you mean by "your crowd," Fire Island may be a better option.

Grist for the guillotine is the only way I can think of such places in anything like a positive light.

Sure, of course for my crowd, but not so much for Our Crowd.

I can't imagine why I would ever pick up on that reference.

Confession time: my GF's family spends time in the Hamptons somewhat often (her parents live in Manhattan).  They're quite well off by any objective measure, but they're also very much peasants compared to your stereotypical Hamptons-goer.  Tongue

I went there once, with them of course.  Montauk is nice, peaceful, and relatively modest.  Easthampton is ugggh insufferably uber-bourgeois, and keep in mind that I normally don't mind a bit of bourgeois.  I'm glad we spent most of our time in Montauk instead.

Eh, Freedom Place.  I like my GF's family, and they vote the right way.

The Hamptons are alright.  East Hampton is just too boring, rich and old though.  And people who have second-homes in the Hamptons tend to be obnoxious, boring and snobby in my experience.

As a New Yorker, if I'm going to the beach, it's either a subway trip to the Hipster Hamptons (AKA Rockaway Beach) or a plane trip to the Bahamas, PR or Barbados.
