1. Clinton
2. Ford       (The last GOP moderate, sadly)
3. Bush Sr.
4. Carter
5. Nixon
6. Reagan
7. George W. (An embarrassment to America and the World since 1/20/01)

If the start date was 1964 then Lyndon Johnson would be #1

I swore I could have posted on this thread already. Oh well.

In order from "best" to worst:

1. (no best)
2. Reagan
3. Clinton (for economic policy only)
4. George W Bush (for foreign policy only)
5. Ford -- a wet sponge, but the best the GOP could do in 1976 (Reagan being a fantasy then)
6. George H W Bush -- likewise, another wet sponge, but one of the worst the GOP could do in 1992
7. Carter
8. Nixon
....

40. Lyndon Johnson

Notice that with the single exception of G W Bush, I rate presidents on how well they've avoided meddling in the economy. If I went by, say, judicial appointments, or foreign policy exclusively, then the list will be modestly different.

ooooooooh, you really put me in my place. I'll think twice before praising Lyndon Johnson the next time.

Just looking at that 1964 Map makes me feel good.

Thats not true. Did Johnson seem like a ruthless tyrant? No, he was thrust into his situation in 1963 b/c of whatever motivated Oswald, and frankly, I don't care what that was, thats something for Baby Boomers to obsess over.

You'd have to be the biggest partisan jackass to put Dubya anywhere in the top 3.  War's a mess, hires friends to imortant gov't positions, the world has completely turned against us, what exactly does this man have to do before you guys say "ok, maybe he's not so great"

If it weren't for Watergate, Nixon would rate higher, but you just can't ignore it.

W is still a work in progress -- in three years, he could be #1 or #6; the only thing I'm confident of is that he'll be better than Carter.

Nixon is redeemed for me because of his foreign policy success with China.
