Say RFK hadn't been shot, and say he gets the Democratic nomination (a big if, I realize).  Any chance of him retaining Humphrey as his running-mate, or would the scars be too deep?  I guess it would be my ideal ticket, since the Hump was privately against the war.

Obviously he won't keep Humphrey on.

I did read a good alternative history book including an RFK '68 candidacy; he picked Terry Sanford.

I'd say Sanders, Sanford, Muskie are all good choices. Sanders is a Southern moderate who can make the ticket slightly less unpalatable to SoDems. Sanford doesn't have the regional cred, Connally and McKeithen are out for obvious reasons. Muskie has ties to liberals and labor while being OK with the Dem establishment. Doesn't bring much electorally to the ticket, mind you. Perhaps Lee Metcalf from Montana as a dark horse? Need to keep the Northern/Midwestern right onside too, since the South is mostly a write-off.

HHH isn't happening, period.

Would Senator George Smathers be too tainted by his anti-civil rights actions in the United States Senate to be considered as a good running-mate for RFK?
