Trying to think of someone less sympathetic than this guy...hell even Lindsay Lohan after one of her arrests is more sympathetic.

The best thing you can say for him is he's a moron for doing this over something so inconsequential for his life.

To be fair, this does contrast a bit with Le Pen's attempt to "rebrand" the FN by cutting the ties with the most radical elements (at least on the surface).

I made an effortpost on this in the other thread, but nobody cared. I guess I should really stop putting so much effort into my posts.

No I seen it, and was thankful for it. Probably should've said.

Besides both involving fascists what is the connection between this loner and what happened back then?

I think the best thing you can say for him is that he wasn't concerned for his narrow self-interest*. He wanted to make a statement people would pay attention to about something he saw as a 'civilisational' issue - and it worked.

*though given his health he probably wasn't going to be around for a long time anyway.

Suicide is never a good thing. You don't have to agree with someone's politics for suicide to be tragic.

This person probably had more going on in his life then gay marriage being passed for him to do something like this.

I see absolutely nothing tragic or even vaguely sad about this. This guy made a decision, and this decision was informed by bigotry and despicable political views. It's not like he was murdered by leftists or anything. He's just a first class idiot and certainly shouldn't be missed.

6 februar 1934: because I thought that because of all far-rightist who demonstrated yesterday, they could have tried to attack the Assembly. I know, I'm paranoiac.

Given that shooting themselves in the head has led them to shooting themselves in the foot it can't all be bad.

I wonder if he was aware that killing oneself, or anybody else for that matter, in a sacred precinct is frowned upon by most religions. The real victims here are the sanctity of Notre Dame and the mental health of the fifteen hundred people whom Venner traumatized in an even more selfish gesture, and one done for even stupider reasons, than suicide usually is anyway. I hope God will deliver this bastard from the dust of the grave, but I'm far from willing to count on it.

EDIT: From a New Yorker article:

Quote

No. Venner doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Mishima. Venner didn't deserve to die a death that would be compared to Mishima's. Venner's beliefs don't deserve to be compared to Mishima's, and I'm not even fond of Mishima or (obviously) his actions or beliefs.

EDIT, again:

Apparently the New Yorker article contains some misleading or false statements about Venner and he was actually some sort of rightist neopagan, which makes this still completely disgusting and unacceptable decision make a lot more sense.

Yes, it's hard to ignore the basic irony of his action.
