Why is India not considered it's own continent when it so clearly is?  It has far more people than North or South America.

In some ways I agree with that book's position, because I thought continents were a strictly geographical thing, the tectonic plates and whatnot.

and then we go back to Pangaea...

And it shows the same thing, obviously.  Honestly, the continents SHOULD be.

North America
South America
Africa
Eurasia
Arabia
India
Australia
Antarctica

if we did the right thing and defined them strictly through geology.

Yes but the historical continents were demarked well before the discovery of Plate Tectonics.

The notion that Europe is a continent really, really, really belongs out the window.

As much as India. The urals separate a serie of cratons  and other terrains that were once a free standing continent from Asia's main body, the same way that the himalayans, hindu-kush, etc. do for the indian subcontinent. India/Europe diferent geologic relation with Asia is a matter of precedence.

Pretty, but highly inaccurate.

Never knew this (though the shape is kind of an indicator), but this happened in pre-pangaean times. Treating Europe as a separate continent makes as much sense as doing the same for North America's eastern seaboard (the Appalachians are the exact same age as the Urals). Of course I have never claimed that India should be considered a continent either.

The Appalachians are a remnant of North Amerca's shock with Africa. I think they are kind younger, if I can remember it right. The Atlas are the other part of it. And Florida was taken away back from Africa and South America, when North America freed itself again from Pangea.

Europe should be a continent due to politics. But I am liking the idea of making India its own continent. I mean, it has more people than every other continent save Asia already.

I often wonder how an alien race would classify and name the areas of the Earth.
