Yes, option one won.

After random selection:

In a meeting of the candidates in Delaware, on Christmas Eve 1995, Bob Dole tells Chuck Hagel to "F**ck off and eat another Bagel, Hagel". Hagel gets very angry and starts ranting about the spirit of Christmas. Dole apologises, but the damage is done-Hagel gets a small boost in the polls and Dole crumbles. Before the first primary, Dole drops out.

The primaries begin with Alexander and Hagel fighting it out in a surprisingly close Iowa caucus. Hagel comes over the line, and just pips Alexander in Neh Hampshire. However, Alexander wins all of the south and some of the swing states, including Michigan and Arizona. Heading into the convention, Hagel has a 23 delegate lead on Alexander, with 36 pledged to Dole, who was still on the ballots for some early states.

At the convention,

Option 1: Alexander gets Dole's delegates to beat Hagel by 13 delegates
Option 2: Hagel gets Dole's delegates
Option 3: Dole's delegates don't break all one way (I randomly draw each one to a cadidate)

oh well, even if you had, it wouldn't have changed the outcome. If you voted for one or two, three still would have won with my vote; if you would've voted for three it went through anyway Smiley

OK, to draw the delegates from Dole, I put seven textas in my pocket. Hagel gets Light Blue, Dark Blue and Purple; Alexander gets Red, Pink and Orange. Black is unassigned in the first round, and then flows to whicheer candidate makes it a closer contest (probably, but not definently, Alexander).

Delegate:
1-Dark Blue-HAGEL
2-Black-UNASSIGNED
3-Red-ALEXANDER
4-Light Blue-HAGEL
5-Black-UNASSIGNED
6-Red-ALEXANDER
7-Purple-HAGEL
8-Pink-ALEXANDER
9-Light Blue-HAGEL
10-Light Blue-HAGEL
11-Pink-ALEXANDER
12-Purple-HAGEL
13-Black-UNASSIGNED
14-Pink-ALEXANDER
15-Red-ALEXANDER
16-Red-ALEXANDER
17-Pink-ALEXANDER
18-Orange-ALEXANDER
19-Black-UNASSIGNED
20-Pink-ALEXANDER
21-Red-ALEXANDER
22-Dark Blue-HAGEL
23-Light Blue-HAGEL
24-Dark Blue-HAGEL
25-Light Blue-HAGEL
26-Pink-ALEXANDER
27-Orange-ALEXANDER
28-Purple-HAGEL
29-Purple-HAGEL
30-Light Blue-HAGEL
31-Black-UNASSIGNED
32-Pink-ALEXANDER
33-Black-UNASSIGNED
34-Purple-HAGEL
35-Pink-ALEXANDER
36-Red-ALEXANDER

Hagel gains 14 delegates, Alexander gains 22 (after Unassigned flow to him).

In the end, Hagel wins by 15 delegates.

The campaign starts in earnest and almost from the start Clinton pegs Hagel as indecisive and ultra-conservative. Hagel, one of the least partisan senators (or at least, he's always nice to the Democrats...) is highly offended by this. He denies it in the media. Overall, it tarnishes...

Option 1: Clinton
Option 2: Hagel

Option 1.  Even though I'd love to see a Nebraskan in the White House.

Hugh, the Republicans almost always use a winner take all primary so Dole would have to win a state to get any pledged delegates.

Tredrick-sorry. they used a different system in 96, I suppose.

Option one it is.

Clinton's attack on Hagel is spun against him. It was considered unPresidential and unfair on his elder. Hagel ignored the issue for the rest of the campaign, but the media didn't, and on election night, nobody was too surprised by the result:

Hagel: 290
Clinton: 248

The Republicans take the senate with them, 52-48, but the Democrats just, barely, very narrowly retain control of the House, 218-217, with 1 independent member from Vermont.
