Another tough choice.

EDIT: Who am I kidding?  The former was much more reasonable by some standards.

Should've been "1794-1824" vs. "1854-Present".

Option one.  It was less monolithically awful, since it included more good Republicans, such as Lincoln Chafee, Michael Castle, and Rob Simmons.

The Bush era GOP, though both are remarkably horrible.

Neocons are far more palatable than libertarians.  I will grant that the current GOP has toned down the horrid gay-baiting that Bush rode to victory in 2004, but on average they are significantly more insane on just about everything else.

Surely you're kidding.

No, I'm not.  To be clear, I'm not saying that the neocons are actually palatable.  I am simply saying that I would rather my adversaries at least somewhat operate within the bounds of rationality.

of course not. as a general rule liberals almost always think this. i think you should ask yourself why that is. although the responses on this thread are more telling than usual. anyway, there hasn't been any significant re-alignment in either party yet. the main difference is that the republican coalition seem to be gradually imploding. so the post-2008 gop may be somewhat 'better' in a 'worse is better' sense for right-wingers and nationalists. particularly as it becomes obvious to people that 'libertarianism' and/or 'focusing on fiscal issues' is not only an electoral dead end (since almost nobody wants to cut programs that they use or really cares about say, 'the deficit') but ideologically bankrupt...

Because neocons are just another kind of progressive.

Considering I'm both a libertarian and a neocon, I'm not sure how I should vote. Wink

Neoconservatism is the weird love child of Trotskyism and American capitalism after all.

The GOP of 2001-2009, although the GOP of 1854-1981 was much better than either of them.

The one that mostly accepted the New Deal-Great Society consensus.

I'm a neo-con, so naturally the 2001-2009 GOP. Tongue

The current GOP is "libertarian"? Hilarious.
There's no difference between the two.

So the Eisenhower-era GOP?

Both of those incarnations of the Republican Party are equallly awful in their own ways. I guess I would go with the Bush-era Republican Party beacuse there were still some moderates left in the party at that point, although most were either defeated in 2006 and 2008 or primaried by more hardline tea party movement supporters in 2010 and 2012. In addition, there are still some Neocons active in todays Republican Party such as Tom Cotton, Lindsey Graham, John McCain, John Bolton and Rick Santorum.

Option 1. I know what that basically results in. If it were to fully control the US Government, the latter would really scare me. It's unfortunately the case that many states have to deal with a version of that right now.
