Well? I'm a member of the Kentucky Education Association's student program, and associate member of the United Steelworkers.

No.  I was almost in a Union while at ONG.  Our sister company owned by the same parent company, ONEOK - Kansas Natural Gas - is unionized.  We weren't though.

Me too! My dad is a member of the USW and my mom a member of KEA, while my grandfather, great uncle, and uncle are all members of the United Association of Pipefitters and Steamfitters (UA) Smiley

I was proudly in the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

FF! The IBT is one of the finest unions around.

I was a member of the Canadian Union of Public Employees for 3 years. Got screwed out of some back pay thanks to a deal cut in collective bargaining and my wages were market rate (less union of dues of course). What a waste.

I was a member of a faculty union at my last college, which probably didn't need one since the place had piles of money and the admin-faculty relationship was pretty good anyway.  At my current institution, I am not a member, because the union leaders here are extraordinarily irresponsible and clinically paranoid, and have pursued minuscule advantages that have measurably hurt junior colleagues and students.

When I was a kid working in a grocery store I had to be....it sucked.

But, alas, no, now I'm self-employed and proudly non-union.

No, my company has a union though most aren't in it. A slight majority of my department is though. Most people don't join because the company gives us great and cheap benefits and they're generous as it is so the union can't force them to give up much more and the employees are happy.

I'm a member of the student union, but that doesn't really count since I believe every student needs to be one (and needs to pay the union fees).

No. I have option of joining the TA's union but I have declined thus far. While the union does have some good points about the university's fees, they seem more interested in politicking than anything else and I'm not particularly interested in adding to that. Besides, I'm friends with a few of the student council reps so I'd probably go through them if I had some issue with the university anyway.

Nobody has to belong to a union by the way. If not in a right to work state, you have to pay the dues, but can opt out of joining, and then, inter alia, if you scab during a strike, the union cannot punish you. The union cannot also charge as part of the dues the cost of political contributions. I never had the opportunity to exercise the opt out provision, but it is out there, or was. I assume it still is.

My mom was a teacher before she retired, though. So she was in the NEA. And so we always had health insurance and, if my brother will stop borrowing stealing from her, she won't have to die under a bridge. Pretty sweet deal.

Hahaha, I'd love to be, but any mention of unions at my workplace would be grounds for instant termination.

Haven't had the pleasure. I think I could only be in a union if I felt it was particularly "thuggish" or "shady".

Little point in these tiny companies unless were exploited a lot worse than I am (and thus presumably a foreign migrant worker who's never heard of the union - the IG BAU actually tries to reach them, gotta grant them that. But the bulk of the membership is in the remaining large companies in the construction sector.)

This has actually inspired me to look up how much it would cost me in monthly dues to join. Less than I expected.

My mother is still a Ver.di member... for sentimental reasons. She's risen to places in the hierarchy where it's pretty effing pointless.

That's a surprisingly cynical view of trade unions from a leftist like you. So doesn't the solidarity argument appeal to you?
