I'm glad Dewhurst made the right decision, but it's a bit sad that he practically had to be forced to do it.

Watching the voters throw her out will be thoroughly amusing.

Lol.  I'm sexist.  I couldn't help but wonder why they chose a woman for this trial.  Then I read this...

They couldn't have built a better filibuster machine for this topic in a lab.

Damn. I didn't even think that this would be an option.  Very happy to see that Texas still has some decent politicians left.

The mayor of the largest city in the state is openly gay.

I know. I thought for the most part that the mayorships of large cities were the only places where they had real political power, though.

The Senate is clearly not in order... a mockery of Parliamentary procedure.

It was a mockery of parliamentary procedure for Dewhurst to rule that it was a violation by Davis to get her back brace adjusted and for mentioning sonograms while talking about a bill dealing with abortions.

I didn't see either.  The former sounds like there could be a valid reason behind it, but the latter I agree with you.

Arguably violating the ADA could have a valid reason behind it?

And please don't parse the ADA, it was hardball gutter politics. Regardless of what one thinks of this bill, that would be the equivilent of calling one out of order for adjusting one's wheelchair.

Grossly indecent.

I didn't see it, and I don't know what rule was "violated".  You're probably right, but I don't know.  Either way, it's a moot point, because he was wrong in ruling the sonogram issue as not germane to the bill, and the voting after midnight was certainly wrong.

Those cities contain millions of people and thus have seats in the state legislature and even in the DC delegation.  The cities in Texas are truly huge.  Of the top ten cities in the country only TX and California have three cities each that make the list.  That is a lot of people.  The problem is Texas has a gigantic land mass full of rock, trees, and rednecks.  The suburbs suck to.

Wish I could say I knew the demographics of Davis' district and how chopped up it was in the last round of redistricting, but I'd say she's safe next year if it includes the non-sexist parts of Arlington and Fort Worth.  Even if it doesn't, I'd expect a real GOTV effort that will make her cruise to reelection.

I may be wrong but at some point last night I seem to recall learning she's in a minority-majority district

The question, of course, is if TX will use Shelby County vs. Holder as justification to slice and dice things in advance of her next election.

If her district contains any significant part of Arlington this is likely.

Here's an article with more details on her district and what happened with redistricting: http://www.wendydavisforsenate.com/article.cfm?articletype=2&articleid=48

And here is a fantastic blog I've been following about Texas redistricting: http://txredistricting.org/
According to this post from this afternoon, Gov Perry hasn't signed/made a decision on what he'll sign.

No, the VAP of both the existing Senate district is 53% Anglo. The VAP of the Senate district that Abbott/Perry may or may not decide to put in place is 59% Anglo. Only a portion of Arlington is in the district, it is mostly Ft. Worth.

Perhaps some conservative Anglos can be convinced on the basis that available abortion will slow the growth of the Hispanic population in the state.

GOP's trending response on Twitter is "#SitDownWendy". Keep feeding the narrative, guys.

Republicans oppose the use of the filibuster here to block 50% from "ramming through" legislation, is that correct?

Texas Republicans are much more than 50%.

Rick Perry and "elitist" is not an association I would expect...

That's a pretty elitist statement, looking down at her as a teen mother, no?

I laughed a bit to be honest.

Although being a teen mom does make her lose a bit of credibility
