Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas all allow corporal punishment of students by school administration. Do you think they should continue to be able to do so?

In 2008, for example, Texas school administrators paddled 49,197 students.

As a graduate of public schools, a paddling would help immensely in some circumstances.

Yes, of course it should be.  Assault is never justified.

I read the question correctly and voted No (I/O).

Yes, of course it should be.  Assault is never justified.

If properly done, corporal punishment is not assault.

I think corporal punishment should be allowed, but that in the public schools it should be permitted only with parental approval.

That's the problem with corporal punishment in public schools IMO. It would lead to standards of punishment-one for students' whose parents approve corporal punishment and one for students who don't.

In public schools, yes, it should be banned. Private schools can make their own rules up on it. However in my personal opinion corporal punishment should be a right reserved only to parents.

no, this classic wash-your-hands-of-all-moral-qualms formula shouldn't apply in cases of beating people.

Hell yes, it should be banned. When I was young, Ringgold still used the paddle (up until around when I was in 3rd grade). When it was used, it never worked. The ones who I remember being paddled turned into the worst behaved students as we got older.

I don't think it's usually applied to graduates. Tongue

I say yes it should be banned, though not to the extent where a teacher is afraid of losing their job for laying a hand on a student to prevent another student from getting hit or such nonsense.

No one should beat their kids. Having a timeout always worked for me. If they "think about what they did" they will learn not to do it. If they get hit for doing something, they will just learn to avoid getting caught even more, and will have violent tendencies of their own.

I think corporal punishment should be an option, but it shouldn't be a first option or even an option for all offenses.  I see it as being most useful as a punishment for doing something that could cause harm to oneself or others to impress upon them the pain that could have resulted in a manner that only leaves them with the pain and not a permanent injury.  It's utility has also largely ended by the time one enters middle school / junior high.

"Wash-your-hands-of-all-moral-qualms" is a good summary of Libertarian ideology.
