Does this really ban smoking in national parks?
That clause is excessive and I don't think we need a law to commission volunteer to clean up.

Senator you have 24 hours to advocate for this bill, with some degree of substance.

I'll move an amendment to strike section 3, probably tomorrow. I'll let the sponsor the chance to advocate this bill beforehand.

Yeah I think we need to strike Section 3.1 and 3.2 needs to be better defined. Other than that I'm cool with this.

I will object to any amendment that removes the smoking ban from this bill.

Why? It reeks of overreach. I understand restrictions in some areas like beaches or walking trails, but if you're on your own campsite, you should have the right to smoke. Now, I wouldn't object to designating certain campgrounds as "smoker-friendly," but I don't think the senate should interest itself with the specifics.

In all, I'm on the exact same page as Senator Gass, I think.

Nix, there is roads going through national parks, especially out in the West. And that's not even talking of towns enclaved in National Parks.

And that would kill tourism in areas like Yellowstone.

The ban on cars is completely unacceptable.

The ban on smoking is interesting. I think I agree with it within the larger context of banning smoking in public places, but this is overkill. As it has been pointed out, why can't someone smoke in their own camp site or in their own car?

The littering issue is covered extensively in sec tion 2.

Enforcing a smoking ban is no more managable than a litter fine. A campfire is far more likely to start a wildfire than cigarettes, which are designed and engineered to be fire safe.

"Blamed" "may have" "think"

Sounds like there's a lot more confidence than speculation.

Are we going to ban campfires too?

I would support banning campfires outside of designated fire rings; several national parks do this IRL.

Ok. But there's no reason not to allow smoking in those same areas.

I've named several reasons why smoking shouldn't be allowed in those areas.

I don't agree with them though.

I'm willing to entertain a compromise on this. My idea would be to use a certain fuel economy threshold to prohibit major polluters from our parks, but preserve the convenient means of travel families use to enjoy our parks. If you can't get behind this, though, I'm fine with the current text.
